Built for the Backroads

This weekend was a little less about chasing forgotten places and a little more about making sure I can keep getting to them. I finished swapping out the brake system on my adventure vehicle with all-new components, including performance calipers, ceramic brake pads, and drilled and slotted rotors. The road has always been about more than getting somewhere.

It’s the people you meet, the odd little stops, the stories you weren’t expecting, and the photographs that come home with you.

That’s one reason Peep and Dixie usually have a few Instax printers packed along on our Forgotten Main Street adventures. We love being able to make a photograph, print it right there, and hand someone something real to take with them. A little piece of the road. A little piece of the moment.

So when we saw that FUJIFILM’s Instax Capture the Joy Tour is rolling into the Oklahoma State Fair, it definitely caught our attention.

If you’re heading to the fair, go find the Instax crew, make a few photographs, print something, talk to somebody you didn’t know five minutes earlier, and see where the day takes you.

The Art Drop Adventure

The Forgotten Main Street Free Art Drop is taking a little turn — and around here, we already know there are No Wrong Turns. Instead of simply announcing where the next Oklahoma Art Drop is located, Dixie is going to make you work for it just a little. Some rusty relics in the Lynden, WA area. Dixie and I always say, it doesn't matter what you shoot....every camera every lens is just another paintbrush. Just get out and capture! I have always been a gearhead, so being able to give old cars and trucks some added life as art makes me smile!

The Last Free Art Drop at Cogar

Today I made one last trip to the old APCO station in Cogar, Oklahoma, and left the final Forgotten Main Street Free Art Drop at the place where this little experiment found its home. Cogar has always been exactly the kind of place Forgotten Main Street was created to celebrate. An old gas station. A quiet Oklahoma backroad. A place thousands of people have probably driven past without ever knowing the stories connected to it....
