What started out as a photo swap became an exchange of joy.
“sigh It’s a long story.”
“I first did yoga just for the stretching—and to calm my mind. One day—I was a fashion designer, and that industry is really stressful. I tried to focus on yoga, to find myself in another place, in another way of thinking, and… well?
Do you know that feeling when you find something that fills you up, and you’re not overwhelmed?
I don’t know when I actually ‘started.’
Maybe it was always in me.
When I move my body, it’s like… uhh, I find myself. I find my expression—my creative expression.
And now I’ve opened my studio—one year and something ago—and yeah.”
I told her how much I’ve felt at home in the studio since I arrived.
She smiled and said, “That is my purpose.”
I’ve been so curious about joy lately.
What brings me joy?
What brings other people joy?
And how can we not lose sight of the joy that still exists all around us?
So, that was one of the questions I asked Irene—
to think about what brings her joy as we began taking portraits.
We paused for a moment.
And she said, I think this moment in time—here, with you.
I took a deep breath and smiled, feeling the slight tingle at the corner of my eyes, like tears might well up if they wanted to.
She continued to talk about how her dream when opening this studio was that there would be no borders.
That anyone could come and feel welcome.
“And you are here.”
Later, she posted on her story—you can see the reflection included here in this post:
“It was so beautiful and exciting to see my studio take the path of borderless inclusiveness.
My dream was to create a place that said ‘Welcome’ to people from all over the world.
Now I understand that this place is real.”
Borderless inclusiveness
— un’inclusiva senza confini —
this dream, brings me joy.
What brings you joy?
