A Mother’s Hands Without a Child To Hold

Self portraits as a reflection on a woman’s changed relationship to solitude after becoming a mother. The tension between a mother’s need for quiet alone time and the foreign, almost haunting reality of only having yourself to be aware of once you finally get it. Maybe never experiencing solitude without an aching again.

This is, of course, a super dramatic interpretation of what has been a MUCH NEEDED and joyful day/night away from home 😂 My trip to Dallas has been restorative and beautiful. I’ve only spent 4 or 5 nights away from my children in the past 5 years and each time this juxtaposition of wanting them so deeply and desperately needing time to recharge sweeps me off my feet.

It was almost impossible to narrow this gallery down to a few favorites, although I think the last slide takes the cake for me 👀 Between this absolutely gorgeous and joyful family and the breathtaking estate, this project was a privilege from start to finish.

The patriarch of their family designed the gardens himself, and complimented the thoughtful botanical design with unique sculptures and little resting spots strewn throughout. It truly was better than the secret garden!!

This is such a tender season for mothers and families, and to welcome someone into your home to document these moments requires a level of trust that I will never take lightly.

Into the fields with the Post Family! One of my favorite moments from this evening was when the kids decided to smoosh mom and dad in for a kiss (slide seven) and then everyone pretended to throw up afterwards 😂 (not pictured.)

I’m always grateful for the opportunity to photograph friends I love and admire, and man do I love all seven of these guys. Thank you for trusting me with your precious family memories.
