Every place I turned or looked there was another view to capture and record into my memory of Monhegan Island.. One of the morning there was absolutely no reason to get up and go out for sunrise, but I on the other hand do not know how to sleep in. This is the view that captured my attention. I was the only person walking around at that time of morning. It was so serene and peaceful. What was also so amazing was I had conversations with some very interesting people. There was no impatience, hatred, discrimination or opinionated people on this island, instead a sense of community. I hope to some day return.

Having never been to Monhegan Island, I certainly was not sure what to expect. Our first night my traveling buddy, Michele Herman took me on a little tour after dinner as she had been to Monhegan a few times. Everywhere I turned, there was incredble beauty. I was like a kid in a candy store. Even my camera did not do it justice. I don't remember the last time I walked up such an incredible steep hill, but it was so worth it. Monhegan Light for those interested was architect, Alexander Parris's last significant design. It is the second highest light in Maine.

I just returned from Monhegan Island. For those who do not know...Monhegan is 10 miles off the coast of Maine and access is limited to scheduled ferry service from Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor, and Port Clyde. It is renowned as one of America's oldest and most influential artist colonies. I have never been anywhere quite like Monhegan. It is the only place I know where you can truly unplug from every day living as cell service and wifi are both iffy. There is a calmness on this island and a sense of community. The many people I met were kind, thoughtful, interesting, introspective, creative and authentic. If you are interested in connecting with nature, hiking, clearing your mind...Monhegan Island is the place. If you want exceptional food and an incredible host than stay at the Monhegan House.

When you are a person with a camera and are visiting somewhere you tend to go places regardless of the weather, the sky and the light and hope for the best. Well, that's what I do. I adore foot paths, boardwalks and small bridges that go over small bodies of water. One of our adventures took us to Bass Hole/Grey’s Beach Boardwalk in Yarmouth Port. The boardwalk was closed to foot traffic. Not being a local, I was not aware, but I learned that there was serious damage to many of the support pilings from the harsh winter. It was a yucky kind of day.

There are two places we visited that I would welcome the opportunity to revisit during fall foliage because of their scenic beauty. The first is the Stony Brook Grist Mill in Brewster, MA. Last year when we went there was lots of construction going on. Now, it’s just gorgeous. This Grist Mill was constructed in 1873, and has historical ties for Brewster and the Lower Cape that date back even further. The mill is the last building that remains of “Factory Village,” which from the late 1600s to the early 1800s was one of the largest centers of industry on Cape Cod.

This second image I am sharing is known as Uncle Tim's Bridge and dates back to 1783. The original wooden bridge weathered centuries of tides and storms, requiring multiple repairs and reconstructions. Uncle Tim’s bridge that stands today maintains the historic design and remains a beloved walkway and a tangible link to Wellfleet’s maritime past. Oh, how I would love to come back during fall foliage to photograph this again.

The North Patrol House also know as “Half Way House”
is located at Forest Beach, South Chatham, MA. It once served as a midway shelter for surfmen of the United States Life-Saving Service during beach patrols to respond to shipwrecks along the Cape Cod coastline. This was a place where surfmen could stop, get warm, or find respite from the wind and blowing sand, while meeting surfman from other stationss and exchanging reports about conditions. In 1991, it was relocated to Forest Beach due to threats of coastal erosion to preserve its history and significance. Listed in the National Register of Historic Sites in 1978.

Sometimes it's not always about the photography, but instead about the experience and the interactions with people. I took a ride to go back to Paines Creek in Brewster around dinner time. It was dreary, but I went anyway. I learned a few things. Low tide there means, LOW tide and absolutely NO water anywhere. I chatted with four different fishermen. Two younger guys had gotten done with there work day were heading out in the hopes of finding some water to fish in. Then there were two older men I chatted with walking back to their cars who said a shuttle would have been great as they had to walk out a mile or so just to find water, but they came back empty handed. I asked them if they are disappointed when they return without fish. Both men said, for them it's a wonderful time just to enjoy their surroundings, chat about life and just catch their breath from the rat race of everyday life.

The Day Cottages along Cape Cod Bay in Truro were built during the Great Depression by Joseph A. Days in the late 1920s and early 1930s and remain one of the most photographed landmarks on Cape Cod and a symbol of “old Cape Cod”. Although ownership has changed after more than 80 years of being in the Days family, the exterior appearance of the cottages remained protected and preserved resulting from zoning restrictions and deed rules.

I learned that early May is probably not the most ideal time to visit these iconic historic cottages because there were workman and trucks parked infront of almost all of the cottages doing repairs to get them ready for the season. While I was not able to get a full expansive view of the cottages, I do have a slice of history in my archives and will absolutely visit during another season. The very last photo is a duplicate, but with a texture overlay.

Wishing you all a wonderful day. Cheers!

I am continuing working on my Cape Cod images. One of the mornings was just blah outside. I decided to go down the the Chatham Pier. Not quite drizzling, but not pleasant weather either, however, the water was exceptionally calm. It was very early when I arrived and there wasn't a fisherman or anybody around. Below are my five favorite images from that morning. As I was editing late last night, I adjusted the white balance on each to please my eye as individual images. I can do this because I shoot in Raw, otherwise if I were to shoot in jpg, I would not be able to do this. Wishing you a great day.

My favorite time of day is sunrise. I am always up usually watching from inside my house having coffee. However, when I am away on vacation I am always out with my camera. Although there are apps to use that help to determine what kind of color one might find, I go out regardless. I'm always afraid I'll miss something spectacular. These were taken at Chatham Lighthouse Beach. This is the second year we have visited and I'm starting to have a feel for this paticular beach. These are a few favorites from that morning.
