I won’t lie. It’s been a rather sad week around here since the wedding on Sunday. The remaining flowers are fading and wilting. I’ve eaten the last of the left-over wedding cake (out of a ziplock bag, like a savage).

It’s kind of like the sadness you feel at the end of vacation when you make one last round in your hotel to make sure you didn’t forget something. You ache to stay, but you also ache for home and getting back to normal, whatever that is.

I felt that same bitter-sweetness as I made my way through the wedding venue one last time, turning off the lights, trying to soak up all the memories we made there that day. There was an ache inside as I peeked into each empty, quiet room one last time. I thought about how stressful it was for all of us just getting to that day, and I felt a little relief that it was over. But in the end, those rooms had been filled with smiles and laughter, dancing and singing…the gathering of friends and family…and pure joy. I longed to hang onto those moments just a little bit more.

God blessed us with a beautiful day and the perfect place to celebrate Janie and Dylan. It was technically their special day, but I’d like to think it was mine, too. It did this weary mama’s heart a world of good.😊

I read that there are various theories about why people didn’t typically smile in early photos. Poor dental health, long exposure times for early cameras, and the idea that showing a serious expression was more dignified than a smile, which was sometimes attributed to madness or drunkenness, are possible reasons. Maybe it was a combination of those things and more. Makes me wish I had a grandparent to ask.

We’ve come a long way, baby!
