A quick reminder regarding photo galleries and watermarked images:
I recently became aware that one of my recent media day watermarked proof images was taken from a gallery, the watermark was removed using AI, and instructions were then shared explaining how others could do the same.
I want to address this generally, because I think there may be a misunderstanding about what a watermark means. A watermarked image in a proof gallery is there for viewing and purchase selection. Removing that watermark does not make the image free to use, and it does not transfer ownership or usage rights.
Photography is my business. These images represent my time, equipment, editing, software, travel, and many hours of work behind the scenes. Taking an image that is being offered for sale and intentionally bypassing the watermark is, in a very real sense, no different than walking into another business and taking a product off the shelf without paying for it.
There can also be legal consequences for unauthorized use of copyrighted photographs and, in certain circumstances, for intentionally removing copyright information or watermarks.
What makes this especially disappointing is that throughout the season I photograph many games and regularly share game-day images with athletes and families at no charge because I genuinely love being able to give back to these kids and our community.
I would really like to continue doing that. I love being able to capture those moments and make them available for families to enjoy. But if this kind of thing continues, I would hate to get to a point where I have to reconsider how — or whether — I release free game-day images at all. I don’t want that to be the outcome, which is why I think it’s important to address this now.
Because of what happened, I may also need to make some changes to the way proof galleries are released moving forward. I hate that, because I always want the viewing and ordering process to be easy for families, but I also have to protect my work.
This isn’t meant to call anyone out. It’s simply a reminder — especially for our younger athletes — that something being available to view online does not mean it is free to take. Please respect photographers, artists, and other small businesses by purchasing or asking permission before using their work. ❤️
