After 9/11, the skyline of New York City is still beautiful, but it feels like the Mona Lisa without her smile.

I moved from Poland to the United States when I was a teenager, a young adult just beginning my life. I settled in the northern part of Brooklyn, in Williamsburg near McCarren Park and Bedford Avenue, where my grandfather had already been living for almost 45 years. I remember how much I loved exploring Manhattan. I know Manhattan better than I know Ocean City and the surrounding area.

That’s where everything began for me—Manhattan, New York. That’s where I learned that photography is not about the photographer. It’s about people, and about real life happening in front of the lens. As a teenager, I saw street performers in Times Square and Washington Square, I watched artists in Central Park, and I visited the Statue of Liberty more times than I can count.

I remember my very first visit to the World Trade Center. I remember the red carpets inside, the golden railings on the steps and balconies, the huge windows, and the view from the top. I remember the Warner Bros. Toy Store, the fountain between the towers, and the two sculptures of cows painted to represent the Twin Towers. I remember standing beneath the towers, looking straight up into the sky.

And I remember my friend, who lost his life on September 11, 2001. His name is engraved on Panel N-23 of the North Pool at the 9/11 Memorial, along with thousands of others, to make sure that we will never forget.

The season has ended… I know that for tourists summer is still going on, but for us, the residents of Ocean City, the season is over. I run a small local business, and I am grateful for every client. To each one I say thank you, with the hope that I provided the highest quality service and managed to preserve their smiles, emotions, and memories forever in the photos I took.

It was a strange season, and either I missed something or someone is not being honest with the official statistics, because they show that this July was better than last year in Ocean City. At the same time, I had the worst July in my 20-year career as a photographer here. My friends working in restaurants and retail also say it was a terrible July. Anyway, June was okay and August was very good.

Even though this was a very weak season for me, extremely weak, I met many fantastic families. I had the opportunity to work with wonderful people, and unlike any other year, I didn’t meet a single family that was difficult to work with. I gave it everything I had!

Thank you for a wonderful season. I’m waiting to see what the future will bring. I don’t know how much longer I will be able to stay in Ocean City, as each year it gets harder and harder. It’s not easy to make a living as a photographer. People today have iPhones, and the thirst and hunger for family pictures has faded, because we all carry photos of our families in our pockets on smartphones. The tradition of family portraits during beach vacations isn’t dead, but it is entering a new era. Maybe it’s time to move on? For now, I’m still here, and as always, I am ready to take photos for you.

Ocean City picture of the day… I went to the beach so you don’t have to. It’s crazy out there!

One of the pilings is cracked. It has been cracked, or at least looked that way, for the last few years. However, it now seems to have cracked more. It’s worth checking.

What a week! I think my camera burned more calories than I did. Between beach family sessions and senior portraits, I met some truly amazing people. There was sand in our shoes, wind in our hair, and enough laughter to make the seagulls jealous.

The kids? Absolute superstars! No meltdowns, no “are we done yet?”, just smiles, giggles, and a few professional-level poses I’m pretty sure they’ve been practicing at home.

Thank you to everyone who trusted me to capture your moments this week. My memory cards are full, my cheeks hurt from smiling, and I’m already excited for the next round.

Here’s a little sneak peek of the fun we had
