Today is the 1 year anniversary of becoming a mother to River. Last week was the 2 year anniversary of becoming a mother to a Coco. Eden's is in July. For Jude, our first foster child, the anniversary is December 18th and it will have been 3 years this winter.

None of them are with me now. I'm writing this to you from a conference in Hawaii which I'm only able to attend because they're not here.

I can't help that it hurts, but I also try to honor the joys of life that come with not having kids "of my own".

People constantly say: if you're sad, then have kids. Sometimes the choices we make in our lives aren't so simple. And you know what? 👏We don't owe anyone an explanation.

(Read that last line again if you don't feel it in your bones yet.)

It's okay to mourn the many things we'll inevitably lose. I may only foster my kids for a short time each, but they are as much a part of me as anyone and anything can be.

Whatever you're grieving, please feel worthy of that grief.
