The older I get, the less interested I am in fake friendships.
One thing I’ve noticed in parts of the mermaid community is how often people smile to your face, then criticize you the moment you walk away.
They’ll talk badly about other mermaids to you, and then turn around and do the same thing about you to someone else.
What’s even stranger is watching people tear each other down in private, then publicly tag each other, collaborate, and hype each other up because it benefits their reach, their image, or their clout.
That kind of fake support isn’t community, it’s clout chasing disguised as friendship.
I’d rather have a handful of genuine people in my corner than be surrounded by people who only support others when there’s something to gain.
Authenticity will always mean more to me than popularity.
