This past weekend took an unexpected devastating turn and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I got a call on Friday that my amazing friend had been in a terrible riding accident, on Saturday morning while ringside at a show, I got another call, one that I never wanted to get. She was gone.
This sport, no matter what discipline, comes with big rewards but it also comes with big risks. Nonetheless, that never really seems to stop us because ...well ...horses. It certainly didn't stop Chloe. She was the embodiment of a tried and true equestrian that never moved past the horse girl phase. Chloe was one of the most determined and brave riders I knew. She was fearless with big plans and I couldn't wait to watch her do it. We're all a little out there for doing the things we do and we wear that nutty badge of honor and questionable life choices with pride. It becomes part of who you are and intertwines itself with your soul. However, in that pool of insanity something amazing happens. In addition to developing a love, partnership and infinite bond with these 1000lb creatures, you find yourself with a community of people that truly understand your particular brand of unhinged like no other. These people? These people become your friends, your confidants, your found family and that, that is something special.
These photos were taken on a whim. Right before I left for FL for the winter it was absolutely freezing and the wind was whipping but the light was beautiful. So what else do Juliane, Chloe and I decide to do? Have a photoshoot of course. I am so beyond grateful that we did. We couldn't feel our numb noses, our extremities had felt like pins and needles, but the potential frostbite was well worth it for this fleeting moment cemented in time. Hug your friends, your family, your pets and your ponies. Don't put off the beach rides, the wine nights, the coffee dates. Life is unpredictable and moments like this remind us how fragile it all can be.
Sending much love, light and prayers to Chloe's family and many many friends that were lucky enough to have known her and loved her. Rest easy Chloe and Cruze.
