For Valentine’s Day we took a tour of the Theater - Colleen won it in a social media contest ($20 dollar value!).
The tour is worth the money! The attention to detail in this art deco masterpiece can reignite a passion for handcrafted work. Some fun facts:
There is no wallpaper in the Paramount. Everything is sculpted, veneer or paint
The men’s room lounge (not pictured) is lined with an ash from Japan (it’s amazing)
Only one piece of original art remains in the theater.
Learned so much other cool stuff and didn’t even photograph some of the more interesting room. You gotta go see for yourself I guess.

In 2013, tens of thousands of California prisoners made history when they refused to eat. The state-wide hunger strike protested policies that kept people locked in solitary confinement indefinitely.

Most were sent to solitary in California for being labeled gang members. But that designation could be based on evidence as thin as reading a certain book, knowing someone in a gang, or sketching an Aztec warrior, incarcerated people and attorneys reported.

The hunger strikers, along with a lawsuit, ultimately won major policy changes.

Today, those who have come home are working to rebuild their lives and help others inside.

Justice-impacted photojournalist has been capturing this journey through portraits primarily at Alcatraz, a site whose history echoes the experience of those in Pelican Bay. Frank had originally photographed men inside Pelican Bay’s solitary unit in 2014, on assignment for The Atlantic. “It was a traumatizing and defining experience,” he said.

Some faces of Zorthian Ranch in Altadena for Sam Anderson ’s story for .

I asked each person to take me to their favorite spot on the Ranch for their portrait. These are some of the portraits we made together.

1 and 5: Robert “Blobbie” Kirkhuff at one of his favorite places on the Ranch.
2: Moses Hamborg in the garden.
3: Caroline Zorthian , one of founder Jirayr Zorthian’s granddaughters, in the garden with her favorite sunflower.
4: Tara Zothrian , a granddaughter of founder Jirayr Zorthian, lived on the ranch for eight years before moving away two years ago.
5: Ian Rosenzweig at one of his favorite spots on the Ranch.

Thank you to David Barreda for this very special assignment!

I recently had the challenge of making
anonymous portraits of "Yuen" for a very sensitive
story on the link between human trafficking and cyber
scamming for
Working on a story like this one is important if our
society is going to tackle these issues, but also
dangerous to the participants involved and many
publications often lose track of this fact when assigning
this type of work.
Participants risk everything to try and help others and
we as photojournalists are just there to try and
empower them, when they are at their most vulnerable.
It is in moments like these that the issues of consent
become paramount.
I want to thank propublica for having an editor like
who understands the
importance of bringing not only myself as the
photojournalist but most importantly for bringing
"Yuen" in on the decision making every step of the way,
before this work published today and I hope more
editors can begin to break down their antiquated (and
dangerous) ideas of consent when it comes to this

Happy Earth Day 🌎 The first time I took a photo of the Milky Way was on a whim in the summer of 2015. I was amazed by the result because the image had so much more detail than I could see with my naked eyes. My goal for this summer is to take more astro photos.
