"Death Valley scale”

It’s so funny that when I see someone in an image I composed I don’t mind them as much because it tells another story. In this case the lone photographer on the dune is quite tiny compared to their surroundings. And this sense of scale always reminds me of how small we are compared to...

“Auntie” revised.
I took some time off from doing photography this summer. But in my time off I was studying fine art techniques and processes to show me different outcomes based on my artistic desires. So here is a piece from my travels to Elmina, Ghana. It’s one of my all time favorites.
This woman was in a crowd of vendors at a fish market and I saw her within that crowd and wanted to capture just this image - nothing posed, strictly candid. Not all the commotion that was going on around her. Just her. I can’t even begin to describe the noise level of the market and the constant movement of people. But yet our eyes found each other and this is what she was to me at that moment. Enjoy your weekend and of course, much Love to you!

"A smile from Nima" -

Looking at this image reminds me of the times people said 'yes' to my request to take their picture. And God knows there have been a whole bunch of times I heard, 'no!'.
This is a street portrait I took at an outdoor market in Accra, Ghana. My guide knew that I would be interested in this shot and she, NaNa Akua, initiated a conversation, negotiation, and finally an appreciation for the moment. This is one from a series called "The men of Niger".

"Desert Tranquility in Black and White" -

Many years ago my friend, Jeff Knight, saw my interest in landscape photography and suggested I go to Death Valley, Ca. Well we didn't have google back then like we do now but I still did some research. At first I thought, "this guy is out of his mind, the freakin desert?! Oh hell no." But then I realized that he had suggested a few other places that I had never been before and they were gorgeous. And his suggestion was right on the money once again.
On this particular day it was partly cloudy and a little windy. And when I looked at it from a black and white perspective I could see the blacks, the whites, the shaded grays. It was so beautiful to witness and to be a part of it. And oh so quiet.
One morning I woke up about 2 hours before sunrise and hiked out to that high peak on the left. And within about 20 minutes after I arrived the sun rose and it was so quiet it was almost scary.
My father once told me, "I'd rather have friends than money" and I thought he was 'crazy old'. But as I have gotten older I see how much I now agree with my father, on some things, lol. Have a great weekend FB fam, and of course, Much Love!
