Eclipse over Rangely Maine

Interrupting the amount of aurora photos to post some pictures that I should have posted awhile ago.

Here's a shot from totality that was taken with several exposures to get the full corona and the moon exposed. The second shot is a wide shot which probably could have been framed better but I was enjoying the experience.

The full final images from the Aurora on Saturday. The G5 Geomagnetic storm produced by X5.8 solar flare produced the strongest Aurora since 2003. Observed in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland in these pictures. People have been posting pictures from as far south as Florida as a result.

Although the pictures are long exposures and able to capture more light than the eye can see, they were still pretty amazing to see in person. You could see the faint green, red and purple in the sky and slight details of the aurora. We are at a solar maximum this year and it's possible though not likely to have another similar event or smaller. I use the an app called Aurora and spaceweatherlive.com for predictions and notifications of possible activity.

If you want to see the auroras or northern lights as bright as the photos head north in the Winter to Iceland, Finland, Yellowknife Canada or a number of other places. It's never guaranteed to see them but I've had some amazing luck in Iceland. The aurora in Iceland was super bright and you could see it moving in the sky in detail. The ground had a green glow to it and you could almost drive without lights it was so bright one night.
