Welcome to the Badlands National Park located in the Southwest quadrant of South Dakota.
Every time I visit this park, I marvel at the geological formations, the erosional features, and the multi-colored layers of sediment.
I try to envison what the original wagon trains must have thought when the arrived at the edge of this barren wilderness. When you see the canyons, cliffs, and mesas, you wonder how do you get to the other side with your wagons? Fortunately the park has great roads, signs to guide you around the park, and park rangers that are happy to give you directions if you need them.
It is a beautiful park with plenty of pull-offs for photo opportunities, and lots of scenic vistas. There are many hiking trails, and many of them have warning signs to watch for rattlesnakes. Yea, I don't know what is beyond those signs, but I'm sure it was pretty.
Here is a collection of the photos taken in June 2025. Most of the photos aren't captioned unless there was some specific point of interest to mention. I hope you enjoy these photos enough to consider visiting the Badlands someday.
