To all of my boys.

“i pray he always comes home.

i pray he is never mistreated.

i pray he is always treated with respect and honor, and is admired by the respect and honor he extends to everyone he meets.

i pray his height is seen as a reason to look up to him and not an excuse to tear him down. i pray the depth of his voice is a reason to listen to his story and not a justification to fabricate fear. i pray his emotions are seen as human and not as resistance, aggression or violence. i pray his deep brown skin is seen as smooth and not a threat because of an ulterior motive or hidden prejudice.

i pray for every wife to a black man, mother or father to a black son. to anyone who loves a man who is seen as a threat because of the color of his skin”
