A green crab spider with freshly captured prey. These sit-and-wait predators often blend seamlessly into vegetation, where they remain motionless until an insect comes within striking distance. Their powerful front legs allow them to quickly seize prey that may be much larger than expected for a spider of this size. After ambushing an insect, the spider then bites the insect, injecting venom that acts quickly to immobilize or kill it.

Bug season rolls on. Meet the reticulated net-winged beetle. Its bright orange and black pattern serves as a warning to potential predators that it may be unpalatable, a strategy known as aposematic coloration.

These slow-moving beetles are often found on flowers, foliage, or decaying wood during the summer months. The distinctive network of raised ridges on their wing covers gives net-winged beetles their name.

The Green Lacewing. Adults are recognized by their delicate, net-veined wings, metallic golden eyes, and pale green coloration. Most species measure between 10 and 25 mm (about ½ to 1 inch) in length.

While the adults often feed on nectar, pollen, and honeydew, the larvae are active predators that consume aphids, mites, small caterpillars, and other soft-bodied insects. A single lacewing larva can eat hundreds of aphids during its development, making these insects valuable contributors to natural pest control.

A stretch spider (Tetragnatha) pauses on a dew-covered leaf. These long-jawed orb weavers are masters of camouflage, often aligning their bodies with stems and grasses to blend into their surroundings. This guy seemed content to chill out among the dew drops.
