A male American Kestrel hunting from the top of an oak branch. I mostly see them catching insects, though at a location near this I did see one catch a small songbird. This was about two weeks ago at the Hamilton Wetlands in Marin County.

This leucistic Yellow-rumped Warbler caught my eye last weekend with all of the white feathers. Still has the yellow rump patch though. I saw it again yesterday morning at the Las Gallinas ponds in Marin County. It was flycatching from a large blackberry bush along the cross road in between the first two ponds you get to from the parking lot, on the second pond side.

A Red-shouldered Hawk blending in with oak trees in my backyard. It was not very skittish, even flying to this perch from one farther away. Squirrels beware! A nice treat on an early winter day. About a week ago in Marin County.

An Anna’s Hummingbird catching small insects in flight. They are so fast that live it just looks like they are flitting about, moving a foot or so and then going back to hovering. This was taken several weeks ago at Las Gallinas ponds in Marin County.

A Forster’s Tern after a successful catch last month. I’m still seeing them on walks in Marin County, though not in the numbers that I was seeing in the late spring. On this day a group of at least eight birds was repeatedly diving into a relatively small section of a large pond at Las Gallinas, which helped quite a bit with being able to get a picture of one just after the catch :-)

I’ve been to these ponds dozens of times and seen lots of wading birds but not an American Bittern. The “Merlin” bird app says: “Usually secretive and difficult to see, but occasionally found in the open.” It did not stay out long before flying to another corner of the ponds and disappearing into the reeds. Last month at Las Gallinas Ponds.

A puffed up White-crowned Sparrow on a cold morning a few weeks back. I am happy to stop a walk for even the most common bird, especially on a nice spring branch like this :-). Marin County.

On a walk last weekend at Fort Ross on the Sonoma coast I saw a number of Steller’s Jays. It was sunny on the way in, and raining on the way back :-)
