I’m a Downriver MI photographer specializing in fast-paced sports, weddings, engagements/portraits, pets, & events. I’m looking into branching into real estate photography & astrophotography, and hopefully being able to do a few NHL games! I’ve had a passion for photography as long as I remember and am getting back into it to be happy, and part of that is capturing memories or ideas for other peop

Turkey Tails!
Trametes versicolor – also known as Coriolus versicolor and Polyporus versicolor – is a common polypore mushroom found throughout the world. Meaning ‘of several colors’, versicolor accurately describes this fungus that displays a unique blend of markings. Additionally, owing to its shape being similar to that of a wild turkey’s tail feathers, T. versicolor is most commonly referred to as turkey tail.

Too tough & leathery to eat, but can be prepared in other ways for powders or teas! Turkey tail mushrooms offer various potential health benefits, including supporting the immune system, and promoting gut health. They are also known for their anti-inflammatory properties and ability to help the body adapt to stress.

Pheasant’s back / dryad’s saddle / hawk’s wing mushroom (Cerioporus squamosus)! This is a saprobic fungus, meaning it decomposes dead wood, and is also occasionally a parasite on living trees. They are found on dead or dying deciduous trees, particularly elm, beech, and sycamore. They can also grow on logs and stumps.

Dryad’s saddle has a distinctive appearance with large, roundish caps that can be light brown, creamy yellow, or whitish. The caps are often covered with large, dark brown scales, giving them a pancake-like appearance.
They’re a great find not just from its appearance (this is a young specimen, it grows bigger!) but also as food! Best cooked when they’re young to avoid toughness, this little fun guy (😅) smells like a watermelon rind!

We went on a guided mushroom hunt with Michigan Mushroom Hunters(will be posting more pictures soon!) and came across SO MUCH trillium! It was exciting.

is our state wildflower here in MI! They are a protected species as picking this spring ephemeral can actually harm the plant, so picking them is discouraged. They can take 5-10 years to flower so it’s best to leave them be!

Spring ephemerals are vital to many ecosystems across North America. An ephemeral plant is “a plant with a very short life cycle or very short period of active growth, often one that grows only during brief periods when conditions are favorable.”
Spring ephemerals emerge and flower in early spring before many of our other native plants have woken up.

They serve their role of feeding pollinators, preventing erosion, and nutrient cycling early in the season. Then they go dormant as other native plants start to grow, so they don’t compete with each other.
