Our last trip exploring the Olympic Peninsula taught us a valuable lesson in being prepared. We had raincoats - but simply not enough. The rain/ mist is so thick in this area it basically becomes an extension of the air. Fortunately as we begin to venture into the Hoh Rainforest we encountered a simple shop called Peak 6 Adventure Store. According to the clerk running the desk the shop had been there before the rainforest was designated a national park – and they had everything we neglected to bring!

There's typically no shortage of trees and wildlife in the PNW but as we ventured deeper into the park we developed a sense of just how small we really are. Granted, it was pretty dreary that day, so not many people were venturing in and out of the park, but that just encouraged our connection with nature. This part of the world is so old, yet absolutely springing with life. Green covers each and every surface and trees fight for the little bit of light that manages to fight its way through the thick canopy of coniferous trees. It's pretty difficult to keep your gear dry in the Hoh Rainforest – this is one of the first times I was actually scared I got my gear too wet. Fortunately, I didn’t (I was prepared on that front) and this was one of the most epic hikes of my life.

I started photography in Southwest Florida shooting the night sky and Sunsets. Sunsets are beautiful, everyone with a DSLR tries sunsets at least a few times. When the sun sets it's a very humbling experience. You're able to put the day to rest and realize the world is still spinning no matter what your hopes, aspirations or problems are.
The Stars - that's a whole different thing. There is nothing more humbling than to look up at the stars and realize that something as powerful and influential as the sun, on a universal scale, is no more than a speck in the night sky somewhere else in the universe. As a kid, I would look up at the night sky for hours dreaming.
Looking at the stars I'm brought back to my childhood dreams. With all the uncertainty in life it's comforting to realize that the night sky never changes, and it's just a beautiful as ever. All it takes is a clear sky to realize that we're not even a speck in the night sky.

Pursuing Passion

You only have one chance at life, and while it's easy to take a route where you can be comfortable, at the end of your journey will you truly feel accomplished? This is an idea I've struggled with for a while. I can continue on the route I'm on now, and more than likely be successful, develop a good reputation and be comfortable. Or I can pursue the things I've always wanted, share those experiences with others and while I may not be comfortable, I'll have some great stories at the end of my journey.

Currently, I'm at a cross roads, and am actually not completely sure what to do. However, I'm pretty sure I'm going to follow the advice of Robert Frost.

Traveling is a humbling experience. When you're able to go to new places and participate in new cultures you realize just how small your place in the world is.
Seattle is an 6 hour flight from DC and obviously in the same country, but if you're able to experience it enough you realize that the world's cultures are diverse, even within the same international boarders, and that's a beautiful thing.
