Our latest participant for the Objectified project, Damian (), is currently in Bangkok after more than a decade working as an adult content creator in the U.S. and Canada. He often receives "a lot of letters from Asian men, mostly from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines, saying that it's great to see another man that looks like them doing what I'm doing." For the years that Damian had been working in big p**n studios, he was constantly fighting against being stereotyped. He pursued smaller studios to perform as a top, and eventually his platform became his own website. Whatever one's sexual performance in the p**n industry, Asian men deserve to define their roles on their own terms, not by how mainstream adult entertainment studios define them or for that matter how general white society perceives Asian men. Now Damian has his own platform to make his own content on his own terms. That kind of liberation comes from the work he did on himself.

This photo session, part of a series called Private Space, came about in Vietnam while my husband & I were there for Tết, or Lunar New Year. We met Kael on IG and decided to create some intimate images in our Ho Chi Minh City hotel room. Kael is from Morrocco and has lived in Southeast Asia for several years. We shared the status of being visitors with no family nearby during this important holiday in Vietnam for which family gatherings are part of the tradition and celebration. In some ways our short time together during the photo session gave us a sense of belonging on New Year's Day so that we could lean into the new year once the fireworks were through.

Taylor .stilson embodies a sexy singlet wearer who is rugged, furry, and confident. He has brawn and brains in a whole package, as his professional website attests.

There is a whole subculture of singlet fe**sh groups within the q***r community that I recently came across online, particularly on IG. Q***r designers have been modifying this spandex one-piece to expand in entirely new directions. The approach is to cover the basics and let your imagination run wild.

Although this photo series Objectified focuses on Asian men in the Western world, we as POC have to reckon with global systems of oppression. While writing this copy in my home office in Los Angeles, the outside world is going through political upheaval. After some consideration about why this project is ever more important to me, I'd say the reason is because this is a form of rebellion and resistance to the oppression of our own being. We stand tall and naked as a form of protest. We can take back the control of our own stories and narratives as proud Asian men.

My first memory of seeing a man in a singlet was on TV, and then later at a gymnasium I watched two men singlet-wrestling on a mat. One of them was furry and scruffy and he caught my attention, and these images became indelible in my mind. I created this photo series to pay homage to the burgeoning q***r desire of my youth and celebrate that this sensibility has continued into my adulthood.

Did you know that in the sport of American wrestling, going shirtless with trunks and tights was the norm until the mid-1960s? The singlet took off in college wrestling and then in wrestling in general in the late 1960s. One of the advantages of the singlet is that the tight fit disallows one's opponent from grasping one's clothing accidentally, a disqualifying wrestling move.

But there have been criticisms of the singlet: Jeff Harder, in a 2017 article for Vice Magazine, wrote that "the singlet simply flatters people with builds that would look good in any uniform, and forces people with imperfections to confront them immediately or avoid the sport entirely." Enter a new style, known as a double or doublet, made of the same Lycra material but sleeve-like and paired with accompanying tight-fitting shorts as an alternative to the singlet. As Wikipedia reports, the double is "for those who are uncomfortable with wearing singlets for modesty or aesthetic reasons."

But are we a little too obsessed with modesty in the U.S.? Straight men in particular tend to reject the more tailored looks of Europe for fear of being perceived as gay, and thus baggy and comfortable is the norm for American men's fashions. But the truth is we don't look to athletes to see their modesty but to see their majesty, and if that inspires gay and bi men as well as the general population that's just how things go. In addition to the practical considerations of the singlet, the outfit's ability to project strength and virility is unmatched. Men in singlets have a special place in my memory as a young gay man, and therefore as an older gay adult singlets will always be my preference.
