Have you ever heard of a Townsend's Dickcissel? This image is not of a Townsend’s, it’s just a regular old common Dickcissel (photographed in Bee County by me). The Townsend’s has only been seen twice in history, one was killed by John Towndsend in 1833 (Audubon painted that one) and one was photographed by Kyle Blaney in 2014. Now I check every Dickcissel I see just to make sure I am not missing the rare one. If you have some time, do a Google Search on this subject. It is an interesting read.

EASTERN COTTONTAIL: Just re-enforced Karen’s garden fence here at Pauraque Ridge. It appears that rabbits love young beet plants just breaking through the soil. Karen’s approach is, “Grow enough to share.” The bunnies don’t espouse that attitude though. If you are here in March and get tired capturing bird photos ,our maximum rabbit population is in the spring. Sprinkle some greens around and take up mammal photography.

As most people know, south Texas is often a temporary home for unusual and rare birds. Coming up is the anniversary of one such rare occurrence. A Greater Peewee wandered from its normal pine-covered mountaintops and ended up just 27 miles from Beeville, Texas. I took this photo on January 20, 2016. Even with many thousands of birders on the lookout for rarities, this species has been discovered in Texas only 28 times. I do hope this brave little traveler decides to come for another visit during the Brush Country Photo Safari so others can get a chance for a memorable image.

American Goldfinch: These cheerful little birds flock to all the feeders around our place here in the Brush Country. Sometimes, they stay until early April before heading north to breed.

Even though I never see Lark Buntings in their breeding plumage, it is always a thrill to find a tightly grouped feeding flock on a crisps fall morning. This one stopped for a minute to be my classic "bird on a stick" shot (northern Bee County).
