It’s Friday, yo. Tonight is the first in a series of talks I’m hoping to host throughout the year. A fireside chat, if you will, with a local photographer. My friend and brilliant wedding photographer Emma from is our first speaker, and I’m thrilled to inaugurate this series with her stunning work. If you’re local and are interested in joining our gatherings, please contact me through my website (you know the drill, link in profile!) to get on the mailing list. I’ve been playing catch up all week as I’ve recovered from this stupid cold, so if I haven’t responded to a message, I’m so sorry. Hoping to be back in the swing of things soon!

Happy birthday dear Neel. The brightest star in my universe.

It’s Inauguration Day in Virginia! We’re so excited here to see Ralph Northam become our governor. Cal was Ralph’s page during his first year as Lieutenant Governor, and he worked hard on the campaign over the last year. He and Neel are heading up to the day’s festivities soon, and they’re busy charting plans for where to park and how many Port-a-Potties are available. Important stuff. I can’t go, and I’m pretty much wallowing in self pity right now. You can cheer me up if you want. Tell me a joke? Otherwise I’ll stay at home trying to organize my photo catalog and do a lot of online shopping. This photo was taken on my weekend in Mississippi and it reflects my mood. Both somber and bright.

No power. 60 mph winds, and the snow has been falling since around 9 last night. But the gas fireplace works 🙏🏻 and we made coffee. The dogs are claiming they don’t live here anymore, but we’re tucked in and warm and watching it blow.

So the sun sets on 2017. We’ve seen some great things happen in our family, and I’ve had some great things happen personally this year, but no lie. Not sorry to see it go.

Sharing this shot, inspired by photographer , who recently shared his favorite sunrise and sunset shot of the year. This shot, in a series on my Nikonos, is one of my favorite sunset shots. From conception to realization, it was just what I’d hoped for. Here’s to more of that in 2018. Be safe out there today, my friends.

Good Christmas morning to you all. I’m sharing a picture from our neighborhood as we’re tucked into the sweetest cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Despite feeling so sad about the loss of our sweet Fatty, it was the best decision to come here where the wind blows hard and you can see stars for days. I’m wishing all of you the comfort of your family, however you create it and the joy of this season, however you celebrate it. Dona Nobis Pachem.

We’d planned a more minimal Christmas anyway (okay, fine, half-assed), but between injuries and ailments things that we usually do just didn’t get done. Christmas cards? Nope. Neighborhood gifts? Nope. Wrapping presents properly? Nope. Remembering to send all of my dad’s gift to him? Uh, nope. If you didn’t hear from us, I’m sorry. If you think tissue paper-wrapped gifts are lame, I’m sorry. Dad, I’m sorry. Today we’re letting it ALL go and we’re headed for the hills for a few days. I hope you know, however we connect at this time of year, that you are in our thoughts and we are wishing the light of lengthening days for you all.

I’m starting to map out my schedule for 2018, and these are the first classes to go on the calendar! You asked for it, you got it! I’ll be teaching a beginner film class at our home in March, and we’ll do another run of the Make the Most intro digital class in May. I’m so excited for both of these classes, but especially to be finally teaching film! Registration will open in the New Year, but click the link in my bio for more information and message me if you have questions!

My dear friend let me tag along with her on a senior shoot a few weeks back, and I had such a blast. When announced their POY yesterday, I thought of this image. Not because I know anything about beautiful Audrey’s personal history, but more because of what I see in the young men and women I’m around these days. Warrior women. Engaged men. They care passionately about their futures and their friends and their country. This is our future, and it’s giving me hope.

PS: I really like taking pictures of people, it turns out. If you’re willing to let me practice on you, or you and your partner, shoot me a message!

Well, it was a night filled with celebration and light for us last night. Cal’s speech is behind him and he did a great job. Not only did he talk about teens and mental health, but he shared his own experience struggling with OCD at his school. Many of his teachers and peers didn’t know, and after he spoke his headmaster called it courageous. No doubt about it. It was. And we couldn’t be prouder. Cal has missed out on so much. Years of making good friends, the way you do in high school. Years of focusing on his grades so he had less to worry about when it came time for college. Years of health and happiness. But he’s stronger now and stronger because of it. He was ready for this moment and ready for what’s next. Okay. Mom Brag is over. Go about your business. 😉
