She Who Plays with Dead Things Don't let the page name fool you, this page isn't just for dead things! How I Got Here:
Quarantine. Lol. Isn't that where a lot of our stories changed?

Once I started working from home I would take walks on my 'lunch break' at Willoughby Beach where I live with my husband. I've always been into nature, animals, photography, etc. So this routine grew to mornings and evenings as well as I learned more about creatures around me. I posted pictures on Facebook that seemed to be enjoyable to some so I thought making a page would be nice for them, and m

e so all my findings are in one place. Ha... Ain't technology great? There's no rhyme or reason to anything I do other then, if I find it interesting, then I want to share it! See my post about my first Atlantic Sturgeon for more info about how my weird 'hobby' began...

***This endangered Atlantic Sturgeon was salvaged under ESA Permit 21858***

April-May! Atlantic Sturgeon are migrating into fresh water from the ocean to spawn! Sadly they often get hit by propeller strikes and wash ashore.
That's where I come in! To salvage and get information to researchers πŸ”¬πŸ§«
This guy had a PIT tag in it. (Like what's put in your pets to ID them). Its approximately 4.5 years old and was caught and tagged in 2019 πŸ€“

"We are simply trying to do what we can with the time we have."

I am proud of what I can do for our planet :)

There have been A LOT of sturgeon casualties, from propeller strikes, on their way back out to the ocean after spawning in the York and James Rivers.
Here's my regular reminder that if you see one please contact NOAA [email protected] or message me directly!!

I've salvaged four...FOUR!! sturgeon in THREE days!! Two of them were females chock FULL of eggs (all the little black dots in the yellow stuff on the 2nd photo).

They were on their way from the ocean into the rivers to spawn and never made it πŸ˜”
Propeller strikes are slaughtering this endangered species.

Other then supplying evidence that these guys need more protection, the only good side to this is the dozens of kids and adults I get to educate and spread love for our ocean to.
Their intelligence and bravery never cease to impress me!

I'm kind of a big deal to them πŸ˜πŸ¦ΈπŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ›‘οΈπŸŒŠ

Two turtles (there are more, these are just ones I have pics of) in the last two days..

From an independent consultant:

"The sea turtles are just getting here and succumb to temperature shock (bottom water cold still) this time of year as they feed. Thought that they will stay down to avoid vessels, construction noise, or just manage their thermal regulation incorrectly and die.

Wait until we see them pile up along the va and nc coasts during wind farm construction this time of year in future.

The terrapin and fresh water turtles are stressed due to spring laying and associated with travel."

Say hello to my little friend!
A Scrawled Cowfish I found on the beach at Willoughby Spit today! (11.29.21)

Adorable, mathematical, and clearly a metal head,
I believe he/she has earned the nickname,
