🌪️ New York’s 2026 tornado count is now up to 23 confirmed tornadoes.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has confirmed two additional EF-1 tornadoes from Wednesday’s storms:

• Letchworth State Park — EF-1 with 110 mph winds
• Portageville — EF-1 with 105 mph winds

This brings Wednesday’s outbreak to seven confirmed tornadoes across New York State.

So far this year, New York has recorded:

• 15 EF-1 tornadoes
• 7 EF-0 tornadoes
• 1 EF-2 tornado

Here’s the updated list in alphabetical order:

🌪️ Two More Tornadoes Confirmed NYS Count Up To 23

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has confirmed two additional tornadoes from Wednesday evening’s storms. That brings the September 2 outbreak to seven confirmed tornadoes and raises New York’s 2026 total to 23.

• Letchworth State Park: EF-1 with estimated peak winds of 110 mph. The tornado traveled 1.25 miles and reached a maximum width of 130 yards.

• Portageville: EF-1 with estimated peak winds of 105 mph. The tornado traveled 1.22 miles and reached a maximum width of 300 yards.

Both were brief squall-line tornadoes that developed around 8 PM. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

With 23 tornadoes now confirmed statewide, 2026 has tied the totals recorded in both 2011 and 1998.

The National Weather Service has confirmed two tornadoes from Wednesday evening’s storms:

• Waterloo–Seneca Falls: EF-1 with peak winds of 95 mph
• Town of Fayette: EF-2 with peak winds of 115 mph

The tornadoes were on the ground at nearly the same time, with their paths just a few miles apart. The Fayette tornado is the only EF-2 confirmed in New York State so far this year.

🌪️ THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY

Twelve years ago today, on September 4, 2014, an EF-1 tornado touched down just southwest of Afton in Chenango County.

The tornado developed around 8:32 PM near Saint John Road and Hill Top Drive. Estimated winds reached 100 mph, with a maximum path width of approximately 50 yards. Numerous trees were snapped or uprooted along its path.

The same storm also produced a six-mile-long microburst near Oak Hill Road. Winds estimated at up to 90 mph overturned two large hay wagons, uprooted trees and peeled part of the roof from a barn. Additional tree damage continued east toward Hall Road and the Afton Golf Course.

These photos show some of the extensive tree damage left behind.

🌪️ New York’s 2026 tornado count is now up to 21 confirmed tornadoes.

The newest addition is an EF-1 tornado near Shelby. The National Weather Service has also rated the Fayette tornado an EF-2, with winds up to 115 mph. The Waterloo tornado was rated an EF-1, with winds up to 95 mph.

So far this year, New York has recorded:

• 13 EF-1 tornadoes
• 7 EF-0 tornadoes
• 1 EF-2 tornado
