Scammer Alert:
Stay Safe Photographers:
This may not be his actual picture remember it could be AI or a stolen photo.
Sadly photographers get scammers and this scenario is coming back around again, so I hope this helps people stay safe. This guy contacted me awhile back, through email so I have a picture from his gmail. Once again remember it could be anyone’s photo.
Being a retired soccer mom and SF. I always do a little research before meeting clients and ask for a security retainer. I also did a little intel search with the local soccer club and asked if they knew him and they said no. Finally, I did a Google Search and it shows him with different names.
The scheme:
This guy is pretending to be a soccer coach and wanted me to meet him at Twin Hills Soccer field for team photography. Very detailing in his email, how many girls, how many photos, agrees on price. I share with him any minors have to have parental photo release, he doesn’t want to provide release that he has (league photo release) or provide parents emails. Still okay. I say no worries, but I can’t photograph without it or a retainer. I can gather releases at the shoot from parents. I share he can collect the photography package fee from the parents or share their contact information whatever is easiest. As soon as I require a retainer most scammers leave me alone.
Note: If they say their CC doesn’t work, I recommend they contact their bank. Leave it at that. Most scammers want to use Venmo, etc.
Sadly female businesses have to maintain caution more than male business.
Tips:
- Security retainer should be mandatory photographers. It may be a tracking tool if needed.
- Verify business or person when you can.
- Let someone know where you are photographing.
- Let someone know who you think you are photographing/name etc. I know sounds very police.
- Unfortunately they could send you a bogus picture of themselves, name, or car details, but they then have yours. That’s why I think there is some safety in required payment.
