Small Keepers of the Unfinished...

My sketchbook is filling up fast these days with rapid sketches. I’m finally working through ideas I’ve been quietly collecting for what feels like a surprisingly long time.

Years ago, one of our grandsons came to stay with us for a bit. At night, after tucking him in, I’d often lie down beside him and tell stories...stories about a little boy who lived in the woods, a friend to all the animals and little creatures.

As he grew, the stories continued. Then one day I realized the little boy had grown up... but the stories still deserved their own homes. They deserved to grow up too. And that’s when the Ginkelmier were born.

They welcomed the stories-from the woods into the sketchbook. And as they grew, I hoped they would let me gather many of them into a more finished form. A quiet walk between childhood and adulthood. Beings imperfect enough to welcome everyone

Small keepers of the unfinished,
living between pen and woods.
They often wear crowns,
leave quiet smudges,
and stay where the drawing is still breathing.
Armless and night-eyed
(a soft echo of those early stories that spilled into the night as a restless little boy snuggled in and settled with each new tale),
they smoke a little petal-and-pencil quiet,
lean instead of reaching,
and sit closer
when the boundary thins
between page and forest
and the stars look like
the oldest unfinished page.
More than anything,
they wish for one best friend
who will simply remain.

I hope anyone who stumbles into this little corner of the world...where the Ginkelmier are slowly claiming their rightful place among the misfits...will stop by now and then. Come for a story, a few words that might be profound, silly, or just a quiet fact. Sit with the Ginkelmier and you’ll always find a friend.

Once upon a very ordinary Tuesday, a Ginkelmier borrowed a shadow for the evening...
Returned it the next morning, of course. Neatly folded, with a polite thank-you note written entirely in moonlight.
No late fees. No drama. Just impeccable manners and a tiny bit of magic.
Some creatures simply know how to live.

Spent my Sunday morning the way the fairies intended... wandering the woods like a slightly feral botanist, collecting an armful of ferns and wildflowers for a small batch of giant eco prints!

Soon these delicate little ghosts of leaves and
petals will become the sott, dreamy backgrounds for just a handtul of Ginkelmier drawings.

Nature’s own ink, my own quiet magic.

Who else turns their Sundays into something a little enchanted?

JUST FOR GINKELMIERS

Sketchbooks are just little forests where the Ginkelmier come to stretch their legs.

I’m going to try something I’ve failed at for years: actually sharing my sketchbooks consistently.
So here’s the deal ... I’ll post pages from this one every week (maybe more, but at least weekly) until the whole book is finished.

Hold me to it. I Will.

These first pages set the tone:
“This book is bound in quiet spells and soft intentions. The Ginkelmier already live between the stitches. Step gently, and they will step out to meet you.”

And the only rule that matters:
Always leave room on the page for something unexpected to grow.

Let’s see what shows up.

🪾✨These aren’t just tree rings ~ they’re secret maps of time.

Where forests once whispered and roots still dream.

I pressed the years into paper, then painted the trees back to life…

Little spirits rising from the wood’s own heartbeat.

Their quiet stories are waiting for you to bring them home. Which one is calling to you? 🌿

once upon a little scrap of paper

a mushroom grew itself into existence

(cap all speckled, stem all sturdy, standing in its own soft grass)

and somehow…

in another corner of the same afternoon…

the sky decided to melt

clouds turned into watercolor sighs

a whole tiny forest rose up from the mist

just because it felt like dreaming

two unrelated moments

same restless hands

same quiet magic

nature and nonsense holding hands again

which one is whispering louder to you today…the mushroom or the melting sky? 🍄☁️
