Barge Loading x 2 at the Port of Lewiston!
A critical component of the agriculture industry in this region is the barging system. Once the wheat is harvested, it is delivered to the port terminals in Lewiston, Idaho & Clarkston, Washington (and other terminals along the river). The wheat is then loaded on barges and towed to Portland, Oregon via the Snake and Columbia Rivers. And finally, much of this wheat is then shipped around the world!
These two barges combined hold over 270 semi-truck loads of wheat! That's enough for about 17 million loaves of bread ... although, this is likely soft white wheat which is used for other things, like pastries, cakes, cookies & crackers. And, I'm not really sure how many crackers that will produce - those numbers are less precise, depends if it's a goldfish or saltine!
