I'm so excited to finally be accepted into this show! If you're in the Columbus Ohio area, this should be a blast to attend. I'll be in Booth 1149 all the way along the back wall (which is perfect for my inner introvert 😂). Hope to see you there!

The Common Buckeye Butterfly is typically a solitary creature but this one found a little friend. One of their caterpillars’ defense mechanisms is that they prefer plants with a specific organic compound that is growth-inducing for them while being growth-resistant in their predators (and thus the predators avoid those). In fact, when female butterflies are choosing where to deposit their eggs, they can sense this compound down to the molecule. While they prefer those plants with an abundance of the compound, researchers found that it only takes one molecule for them to consider the plant an option. 🦠🦋🤎

Great Fritillaries are notoriously difficult to photograph, as you can imagine. 😅 They barely slow down at all!

Meet the spooky and the seasonally appropriately striped Orange Assassin Bug! All assassin bugs are predatory, and while some of them feed on blood, some of them inject a venom into their victims that liquefy their insides so they can be sucked out. 🥴 If you come across any type of assassin bug, it’s best to just leave them alone. They don’t appreciate interaction very much! 😬🧡

If you don’t know this little one, meet the tiny and fast-moving Skipper! You can tell them apart from butterflies and moths because they have antennae that hook backwards at the end, whereas butterflies have little k***s at the end of their antennae and moths have comb-like antennae. There are over 3500 species of skippers, but this little one is the Peck’s Skipper. These are native all across Canada and the eastern US. 🧡

The Great Spangled Fritillary is a native butterfly that enjoys a fruitful partnership with various species of violets, although a thistle will do in a pinch! 🧡✨.

In North America we often call this ethereal and complex flower Queen Anne’s Lace. It’s also known as the wild carrot, and is fully edible. The central floret helps attract insects and pollinators, and it’s a favorite of the black swallowtail butterfly. This wildflower is super common but no less beautiful 🤍😍

This is a new one for me! This Dark Flower Scarab is native to North America and grown to about 1.5 cm. They eat pollen, then wash down a tasty meal with some fermented sap or juice from decaying fruit. Apparently these little guys like to party! 😂🥂🥴🪲
