I’ve been getting so many Newport proposal inquiries lately 💍 so let’s talk planning!

With the busy season in Newport approaching, you’ll want to start booking everything at least a month in advance — including your photographer (sometimes sooner during peak season!).

A few proposal tips from a Wedding Photographer who has seen it all:

✨ Check the location rules
Many popular spots in Newport — especially the mansions — are considered private property. If you’d like a professional photographer there, we may need to look into permits or choose another beautiful location nearby.

✨ Test the ring box with your outfit
So many people panic when they realize the box outline is very obvious in their pocket. Try it with your outfit beforehand, or look into slim ring boxes if needed.

✨ Practice the kneel
Yes, really. You’re going to be nervous — let’s nail the kneel first 😉

The day after Thanksgiving, Chad pulled off the ultimate surprise proposal at Castle Hill Lighthouse in beautiful Newport.

Chad had Kara completely convinced he was flying home early after visiting family for the holiday. He even went to the airport to really sell the story. Meanwhile, Kara arrived at Castle Hill Inn thinking it was just a girls’ day out for drinks with her family. Instead, she found Chad waiting for her along the path near the lighthouse, ready to propose.

Bonus points: Kara’s best friend (and wedding planner!) helped set up the sweetest celebration spot with a cozy blanket, flowers, and champagne waiting for them after the big moment. Kara’s reaction was pure shock and excitement. Chad kept telling me how hard it is to surprise her because she always figures everything out… but this time he absolutely nailed it.

After taking a few quiet moments together and capturing photos by the lighthouse overlooking the Narragansett Bay, we walked back toward the main building where Kara was surprised all over again — this time by their entire family and close friends waiting to celebrate.

There were lots of tears, hugs, and happy smiles before everyone headed inside Castle Hill Inn for dinner, drinks, and a night of celebrating their engagement together.

Moments like this are exactly why I love photographing Newport, Rhode Island proposals and engagements — the ocean views, historic landmarks, and the pure joy when someone realizes their forever just began.

I think I must of told Sam and Brandon 100 times they are the most smiley people I have ever met. Not a moment went by (even at our engagement session) where they didn’t stop smiling. Even when we tried a serious photo, we all just broke out in laughter because it so wasn’t them.

At Mina & Elijah’s engagement session, we joked about how iconic it would be if we somehow ended up on a yacht during their Newport wedding… since the Newport Boat Show was the same weekend.

And then we fully manifested it ✨

A boat owner saw them taking photos and invited us aboard for a few quick portraits. It was perfect and makes for such a fun story to tell!

Mina & Elijah’s September wedding at Newport Harbor Island Resort felt like peak Newport magic ✨ The boat show in full swing, the Newport Bridge stretching over the water, and the kind of coastal breeze that somehow makes every veil + hair flip look cinematic.

There’s just something about a Newport wedding in early fall — blue water, perfect light, and wind that actually cooperates. (More to come of the yacht we got invited onto ⛵️)
