🚨 New California Law Requires Booster Seat for Kids & Teens Ages 8-16 Years Old!

AB 435 changes the rules for kids ages 8 to 16 and YES, some teens will now be required to stay in booster seats.

Here’s what you need to know:

👉 The old rule: Booster seats were required only until age 8 or 4’9”.
👉 The new rule: Starting 2027, kids 8–16 must pass a five-step seat-belt fit test to ride without a booster. It’s no longer just about age or height — it’s about whether the adult seat belt actually fits safely.

✅ The 5-Step Fit Test

A child must be able to:
1️⃣ Sit with their back flat against the seat
2️⃣ Bend their knees comfortably at the edge of the seat
3️⃣ Have the lap belt across the hips, not the stomach
4️⃣ Have the shoulder belt across the shoulder, not the neck
5️⃣ Stay in that position for the entire ride

If they fail any step → they must stay in a booster or proper child restraint.

❓ Why the change?

Because adult seat belts often don’t fit pre-teens and smaller teens — and poorly fitting belts can cause severe injuries to the neck, abdomen, and spine in a crash. This law shifts safety rules from an age/height standard to a fit-based safety standard.

📅 Effective: January 1, 2027
📌 This applies to all kids riding in cars, regardless of who is driving.
