Perfectly Chaotic.

During their session I said, "Let's see if I can cover up some kids in the background" when I was photographing just Andy and Madeline. And she responded with "It's okay. It's our life right now!" and my entire being smiled and got sad and was grateful at the same time.

This stage is HARD.
Borderline survival mode. I remember it.
Veteran moms would tell me "just embrace it and cherish it because it goes by so fast" and I would scoff under my breath. And here I am screaming it to you, "it goes by so stinking fast and yes, you absolutely will miss it".

I miss it so so much. Did we get a photo of them all looking and smiling? Yes. But I truly love the sweating holding two kids up while trying to keep them from falling, the dandelion seeds over their faces, the wrangling everyone to safely get down the hill, the baby girl wanting to do her own thing...it really is perfectly chaotic.

The photo squares this morning were displaying everything I have worked hard towards. However, it also reminded me instantly to remember where I started!

20 years ago we had our sons newborn photos taken and I remember telling my husband that I think I could learn that skill. I needed something as an outlet. He bought me a camera that Christmas and I dove right in.

I took 1-2 beginners photography courses from a friend of a friend and the rest I googled, watched YouTube videos or troubleshooted by calling up Norman Camera.

I am a self-taught photographer and I think sometimes that makes me hesitate to really value what I do and definitely it makes me hesitate to think others value it as well....but every year I fill my calendar and I stand amazed now but you know what? Every year when I started I also filled my calendar...and I stand amazed today thinking about that.

I kind of laugh a little at the photos of where I started. Neon greens, blown out skies, crooked photos, props and more props (seriously props to those clients that have been around long enough to see me ...well my husband, haul literal COUCHES to my sessions). However, I also feel deep gratitude for those who trusted me then and stayed with me until now. I have watched your kids grow into adults and that is truly such an honor!

So, photographers, show me where you started and where you are today!
