So… this happened.

I finally updated my headshot y’all!

I’ve spent years encouraging people to refresh their photos, while mine quietly sat online collecting dust 😬

Then came the moment. An upcoming panel asked for my headshot… and pulled the old one from my site.

Lesson learned (again):
If you don’t control your image, someone else will. They out here picking and posting your 10 year old headshot! 😂🤣

Most people wait because life happens.
Weight shifts. Faces soften. Curves appear. Confidence evolves and life leaves marks!
And we tell ourselves, “I’ll do it when…”

But here’s the truth:
You don’t need to look like who you were.
You need to show up as who you are.

This is me, now.

Grown. Seasoned (like Lawry’s salt) but (more) Comfortable in my skin.
And yes… I’m a little obsessed with this self portrait series I created this weekend. 💁🏽‍♀️

My advice… Don’t get ready. Be ready. BeReady

Dr. Janelle Green Smith RIP. 1/2/2026 A beautiful person, a go getter, an advocate, a fellow photographer, a midwife, a wife, a MOTHER.

Knowing that childbirth could still be deadly for Black women—
and knowing how often our voices go unheard or dismissed—
she chose to step into that space anyway.

She became a midwife not for recognition or praise,
but because Black mothers deserved protection, care, and someone willing to stand in the gap.

She delivered hundreds of babies.
She devoted her life to advocacy, education, and the well-being of women—especially women of color.
And still… childbirth took her.

I don’t understand how God moves.
I don’t understand why someone so aligned with purpose, so deeply needed, could be taken this way.
I’m sitting with that. Quietly. Humbly.

What I do know is this: her name must be said.
Her work must be remembered.
Her mission must be elevated.

Janelle—
I’m so grateful you found and married the love of your life.
I’m so grateful you carried and gave birth to the love of your life and brought Eden into this world.

May Eden always be surrounded by stories of who her mother was.
May she feel your presence as she grows—guiding her, grounding her, loving her.
May she know her mother stood fearlessly for Black women and their children.

This is not just a tragedy.
It’s a call.

Dr. Janelle Green Smith.
We will not forget you.

I had the honor of creating this portrait for CONSUMED, an exhibit built around unearthed artifacts found right here in Newark — real remnants of how we’ve lived, what we’ve used, and what we’ve tossed aside without thinking twice.

My piece pulls from the old “Throwaway Living” campaign that once celebrated plastic as the future… fast, easy, disposable. Back then it was marketed as freedom. Now we’re standing in the consequences — in our neighborhoods, our bodies, and the world we’re leaving behind.

Being part of this exhibit made me look at my own habits, my impact, my responsibility… and honestly, it’s eye-opening. That’s why I’m so proud to stand with these artists and share this work.

If you’re in Newark on November 20th, pull up.
Come see what we found… and what it’s trying to tell us. Free and open to all.

Every year, I host a free portrait station in my studio for Open Doors. This time, I showcased my University High students’ series “Three Sides to Every Story.” It’s a triptych-style project that encourages you to meet someone from the top down—head, midsection, and feet—giving you a deeper sense of how they carry and express themselves.

This was such a meaningful moment for my students to put their new photography and communication skills to work. They stepped outside, engaged with strangers from the neighborhood, and photographed people with confidence and curiosity. They did an incredible job, and visitors loved seeing their work. I’m so proud of each of them.

I also displayed a few pieces from my own travels—Havana, Haiti, Africa—and portraits captured in Newark.

In my portrait station, I photographed visitors who were willing to jump in front of the camera. Just like every year, people were hesitant at first, but once they stopped to think about the last time they were documented, especially with their kids, something shifted. Many couldn’t remember the last portrait they’d taken together. These spontaneous moments became an opportunity to archive themselves exactly as they are—no prep, no styling, no makeup.

One of my favorite parts? Seeing couples who’ve been together 20+ years decide, right on the spot, to finally be photographed (again).

Here’s to another year of archiving strangers, sharing stories, and bonding through the art of documentation.

Art heals. Art reveals. You are art.

Client Repost from

2024 was a ride — full of twists, turns, and lessons. But God, the Gang, and therapy 🙌🏾 kept me grounded. The biggest takeaway? Rest and trust.

As we step into a new year, I’m excited for what’s ahead — big goals, big love, bigger blessings, and a Big Brother!

Wishing you all peace, joy, and growth in 2025.

XO,
