All couples should do an engagement session. There, I said it.
But not for the reason you may think. Often couples will use it to try out a photographer, but weddings and engagement sessions are really different beasts. :) For one thing, often we can reschedule engagement sessions if there is bad weather. Weddings on the other hand, pretty much never. And engagement sessions are all about portraits, which isn’t my main focus on a wedding day. (but of course we take them!) It can be helpful for determining a photographer’s personality, seeing how you look in photos and if you want to adjust some things before the wedding.
The BEST reason is to have professional photos for your save the dates, newspaper announcements, and your wedding website. It is also a fantastic way to have photos in a location other than your wedding. It could be for sentimental reasons, (we met here, love it here, live here) or even, in place of a destination wedding that didn’t work out.
