Humans of Johannesburg

Humans of Johannesburg Johannesburg, one story at a time. Everyone has a story. Meet the Humans of Johannesburg.

Humans of Johannesburg is inspired by Humans of New York and my goal is to import the HONY spirit into The City of Gold (hopefully providing an African twist). The portraits I take and stories I share become the subject of a vibrant blog as I continue to gather bits of human life in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"We make schoolbags for underprivileged kids that live in disadvantaged areas. "We had volunteered at a shelter one day and had never planned to start our own. I had 3 dogs that shelters refused to take in, so I became upset and decided to do it myself. We created a logo and a page, 2 hours later we had launched it and by that night, we had gained 400 likes. We had rented out kennels to begin with and eventually bought our own property, by the end of 2 weeks we received about 10 000 emails and constantly had missed calls. It went viral! It's a continuous project but a much needed one, there was nowhere else for puppies to be cared for."

"I was an English teacher 50 years ago during which time I took 300 photographs of Fietas. My photographs appeared in an exhibition in Fordsburg and were later used as subway murals. That's my story."
