Maribel Cancel, of the Bronx, converted to Islam a year ago. Originally from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Ms. Cancel was raised Catholic. Photographer , who took Maribel's portrait, focused her work on dispelling the negative stereotypes of Latinas who follow the Muslim faith. Her project, "A Transcendent Calling: Latina Muslim Portraiture," emphasizes the individuality of Latinas who have converted to or have been born into Islam. “I am Latina, Boricua and Muslim," Maribel said. "Just because we are Latina doesn’t mean we can’t be Muslim.”

Maribel Cancel, del Bronx, se convirtió al Islam hace un año. Cancel es originaria de Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, y fue educada como católica. La fotógrafa , quien tomó su retrato, centró su trabajo en romper con los estereotipos negativos de las latinas que siguen la fe musulmana. Su proyecto “Un llamado trascendental: retratos de latinas musulmanas”, hace énfasis en la individualidad de las latinas que nacieron bajo el Islam o se han convertido a esa fe. "Yo soy latina, boricua y musulmana", dijo Maribel: "Solo porque somos latinas no significa que no podamos ser musulmanas".
