Oh 2024…what a year. As you can see, it started out GREAT; made some amazing new friends, started a new hobby 💃, got bangs, traveled a bit (Barcelona for fun, Denver for fam), my best friends got married, played lots of board games, MADE a board game for our nieces and nephews, took a pottery class, got a beast of an espresso machine and worked a bunch of amazing weddings of the most incredible couples and worked with incredible photographers & videographers!

And then October hit and sh*t hit the fan. For those who don’t know, my husband, Dan, was rushed to the ER because half his face wasn’t working due to a sudden case of Bell’s Palsy. Unfortunately, the diagnosis didn’t end there, it was in fact a sign of a much more serious diagnosis; acute monocytic leukemia (AML). We were in the hospital for a month as he immediately started chemotherapy and was continually monitored as he reacted to both the illness and the chemo. Then, he contracted RSV and had to be transferred to an isolation room. Between the violent coughs, fevers, a loss of appetite that lead to him losing over 30lbs, the many many procedures he had to endure (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, echocardiogram, lumbar punctures, bone marrow biopsies, you name it) and losing all his hair, it’s been hellish…Luckily the treatment worked as well as it could have and he has been in consolidation since. We’re home now and go to the hospital every other day to monitor his counts, do further testing, and make sure he gets any blood or medication he needs (which sometimes takes the whole day).

And then, to make things even worse, one of our cats, Aella, passed away suddenly from an unknown illness (most likely neurological). A punch in the gut while we were already at rock bottom😔. We buried her in the backyard before going back to the hospital for a high dose of consolidation chemotherapy as an inpatient for 4 days in mid December.

A spring engagement session on Roosevelt Island has a nice variety of backdrops: cherry blossoms, NYC skyline, a park, and even the tram to and from the island is a photo opp, I’ll post those next time:)

Elif & Josh’s engagement session: part 1! We started this fun engagement session in Central Park before moving down to Grand Central, NYPL, and Bryant Park! and YES we did hit all the spots! It may sound like a lot but we were done in about 2 hours and because we’re having so much fun, time really flies😉 I always say, if we’re gonna be in the city for your engagement session, might as well get the most out of it! ❤ Stay tuned for the second half of the session✌

I love capturing this families’ photos every year! They have so much energy and it makes my job so easy when the kids see an open field and start running around😆 Also, they’re adorable and like the coolest kids ever ♥️

For my family sessions I always like to capture all kinds of combinations and sprinkle in some “formal” group photos (looking at camera), which is really only about 10% of the session. The other 90% of the session is candid, and what I like to call “family playtime.” Here are the combinations I try to get during a family session:

-Whole Family
-Just the kids
-Just the parents
-Each Parent with all kids
-Each Parent with each kid
-Just the girls
-Just the boys
-And any other combination that happens naturally as they run around, explore their surroundings, and run back to their parents for hugs

I’ll also include some easy prompts/games to give the session SOME direction. For example we’ll play “red light green light” (when I turn around with my camera, they have to freeze and I take pictures), “ring around the rosie”, playing tag or just having them race each other🔥 This way the kids get to have fun and we get their natural smiles & personalities documented😄

Family session in Hawaii🌺 This session was extra special for two reasons: Joy was my roommate when we studied abroad in Japan and I’m so grateful that we kept in touch all these years despite living on opposite ends of the US. Secondly, this was Kai’s first time at the beach!! 🏝️ He kept trying to eat the sand 😅 You gotta learn somehow I guess? 🤷🏻‍♀️
