February 20, Quarantine in Queens, Day 1067

Today is President’s Day. Here’s a photo from Washington D.C. taken last year. I went there to speak at a photo event after I recovered (two weeks in quarantine!) from my relatively mild bout of Covid-19.

American democracy has survived the last three years. But barely.

Also, a reminder that, on average, 3,000 people are still dying of Covid in the U.S. each week. It’s not just about the economy.

“The Museum of the City of New York is pleased to announce the first in an ongoing photography exhibition series. Inspired by the Museum’s landmark presentation of the same name in 2000, this series will occur every three years and engage different themes and issues of the contemporary city.

The first installment examines the idea of “Home.”

In recent years, the city has struggled to reckon not only with the ongoing dynamics of economic and racial inequality but also with massive challenges unleashed by the COVID-19 crisis. This exhibition includes photography and video work made over the past several years that creatively documents and interprets this changing cityscape and the disparate responses and experiences of New Yorkers, straddling the stories of the city before, during, and after the pandemic.

May 25, Quarantine in Queens, Day 797

On the first night after my positive Covid test, Sophia slid this handwritten letter under my door. She didn't like the way I was joking about Covid online, or telling everyone it was "mild." Why do we feel the need to announce that our Covid is mild now? Every time a late night talk show host gets Covid, they always release the information in Twitter as a joke.

I probably felt the need to "take this too lightly." It's a common American problem. We don't like to focus on anything for too long. There was another shooting at a school. We get outraged for a day. And then we move on. We take things lightly because our news cycle pushes us on to move on to another topic before we do anything about the last one. So the only way to deal with anything is lightly.

I'm still infectious after a week, so will be staying in my mom's bedroom a little longer.
