My favorite, go-to 99 Cent store moved across the street to the west side of Broadway. The guy at the new location told me the building is coming down to make way for a high rise, some developer’s idea of opportunity. For himself. Definitely not for the community. Definitely not a local. I realized why all the other storefronts in that building have had Store For Rent signs for so long now. A building like so many others in Manhattan that I’ve come to take for granted. So unassuming when you pass by every day. But when you look at it more closely, look up, you see its original, faded beauty. There’s something reassuring about low buildings that are high enough to be able to see the sky and the street from where you stand. But the trend is to build so high that you don’t have to look at the street below. Isn’t that the truth of what we’ve become?
Look up. It’s not going to last. Unless we do something about it.

The light changes so fast this time of year. Chasing the light after a heavy rain, you could break your neck sliding down the oily black hillside.
