The glowing tide sometimes seen along the San Diego coast is caused by a type of microscopic marine algae called Lingulodinium polyedra, a species of dinoflagellate.

During the day, large concentrations of these organisms can create a reddish-brown “red tide.” At night, when the water is disturbed by waves, swimming, or boats, the cells emit a brief flash of blue light through a chemical reaction involving a light-producing molecule called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase.

Scientists believe this flash acts as a defense mechanism. When a predator disturbs the dinoflagellates, the sudden burst of light may startle the predator or attract larger predators that might eat it.

Each individual organism produces only a tiny flash, but when millions are concentrated in the surf, the result can be spectacular glowing blue waves along San Diego beaches.

Every time I visit New York City, I’m always blown away by how much has changed in the physical environment since my last visit. It seems as though every other day, there is a new skyscraper being built. It’s hard to believe there could be a city more than twice the size of any other American city, but when you finally see it for yourself, it begins to all make sense!
