Interesting Facts: The Breakers is known for being a Vanderbilt estate. Cornelius Vanderbilt, also know as the Commodore, quit school at 11 to work on his father’s ferry. At age 16, he started his own ferry service transporting passengers and freight between Staten Island and Manhattan. He then made money in steamships before becoming a railroad tycoon. Throughout his career, he undercut competitors and dominated to the point where competitors paid him to move to another location or close shop altogether. When the California Gold Rush happened, Vanderbilt brilliantly established a steamship route across Nicaragua to take passengers and freight from NYC and New Orleans to San Fran. This new business, the Accessory Transit Company, became so successful, his competitors agreed to pay him $56k a month for him to end his business (according to history.com and britannica.com). I don’t know about you but I had to do a double take on all of those facts.

Interesting Fact: Seagulls are fairly intelligent birds. When they need to get to the meat inside something hard shelled, like mollusks, they fly up in the air and drop it on the ground so it breaks open. They stamp their feet in a group to imitate rainfall in order to trick earthworms to come to the surface. They even use bread crumbs to attract fish (according to justfunfacts.com and one kind planet.org).

Cape Town, South Africa: a city that has a Maserati dealership in one part and yet is literally lawless in another. It has some of the best restaurants in the world and the nicest people. It’s a unique city to say the least, one that should definitely be added to your bucket list.

Interesting Fact: Even with the very noticeable income inequality throughout the city, Cape Town is the most equal city in South Africa income wise. The three cities in South Africa with the largest income disparity are Buffalo City (East London), Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni (East Rand) (according to capetownmagazine.com).

Interesting Facts: This lavish door and the path behind (which leads to the Hudson River) is part of the Untermyer Park and Gardens, a historic 43-acre public park located in Yonkers, NY. This part of Untermeyer Park and Gardens was modeled after Villa d’Este - a Renaissance garden on the shore of Lake Como in Italy.

Finally got to experience the real Little Italy in NYC yesterday. I had very high expectations for Mike’s Deli and yet they somehow exceeded them. Would normally order a sandwich on a hero but the waiter recommended focaccia and I’m glad he did; their focaccia is so soft and yet has the perfect amount of crispiness as well. I can’t wait to go back to Arthur Avenue.

This is the Yankee Stadium Big Boy (their version of the Italian sandwich but with mozzarella instead of provolone): mortadella, ham, salami, capicolo, mozzarella extra heavy, lettuce, and sweet peppers fully loaded (which means lettuce, tomato, sweet or hot peppers, onions, salt, pepper, extra virgin olive oil and reduced balsamic vinegar added to any sandwich).
