This week marked 15 years since the fire that took down the Great House on Necker Island. Lightning, a hurricane, and within minutes one of the most storied homes in the Caribbean was gone.

I had the great pleasure of shooting on Sir Richard Branson’s island for my book A Virgin Island in 2014 - still one of the most diverse, magical places I’ve ever pointed a camera at. Turquoise water, flamingos, giant tortoises, a jungle that felt untouched. You don’t forget a place like that.

From a feature perspective she's one of the most striking faces I've come across, the strength in it, the beauty.

I didn't tell her to sit there, under that window. She just went and did it, and gave me this expression.

That's Isabeli: fun, cool, adorable, and completely herself in front of the camera.

Bella in Lily Pond, The Kimberley, West Australia, 2019

I made this portrait while leading Bella to one of the high water holes in the Kimberley, out of reach of the crocodiles that infest the rest of the area.

The water in them is pure rainwater, collected during the wet season. A true oasis in a watery desert.

My photographs in the Kimberley always remind me how beautiful our world can be, and how fragile our connection to it is.

It's part of why I made Belong: a body of work built entirely around that connection, and what we stand to lose if we look away from it.

Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos, 2017

I was on vacation with my wife and kids. Hailey was there with Justin before he was her husband, and some friends. That’s how we met. Just people on an island.

We talked for a couple of years about doing something real together; an art-driven portrait session.

By the time I got her in front of the camera in New York, it was 2017. So much had changed in her life, in all our lives. She’d grown, into someone with great maturity and talent.

Erin Heatherton, 2012.

One of the most striking faces I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing.

There was a symmetry to her, a natural beauty and openness, what I’d call a hippie spirit,
that the camera just responded to.

You’re always working to bring that quality out in someone.

With Erin, it exceeded even my own expectation.

Some of the photographs from this session have become the most collected in my editions.

Noot seear, Cuba, 1997.

A shoot that's stayed with me.

People talk about fashion like it's always moving and it is, but when I go back through these I'm struck by how little actually changes. The silhouette, the way fabric fills a room.

There's something about an Armani dress that captures that perfectly. In some ways it doesn't change at all, and I think that's what Giorgio always knew.

It's just timeless.

Necker Island, 2009

Necker Island has a way of doing the work for you. You put people in a place and let the story develop - the photograph is already there, you just have to find it.

That rock jutting out of the water caught my eye immediately. When you're working with someone like Rosie, you can build an entire image around a single natural detail and have it hold together as one complete thing; shape, light, figure, all pulling in the same direction.
Everything that inspires me in terms of shape and light comes from nature.

Rosie understood that instinctively.

That's what made the frame.
