“María Félix: La Doña”
✨ “María Félix was born twice: first when her parents brought her into the world, and again when she invented herself.” —Octavio Paz

Icon of Mexico’s Golden Age of cinema, María Félix (1914–2002) remains a symbol of strength, elegance, and rebellion. Known as La Doña, she broke conventions with her powerful portrayals of fearless, commanding women, redefining femininity on screen.

This film series, presented by and MoMA Film in collaboration with , , celebrates her legacy through landmark works from 1942 to 1957—including Doña Bárbara, Enamorada, and collaborations with acclaimed directors like Emilio Fernández and Jean Renoir.

Beyond the screen, Félix lived with intensity—turning down Hollywood, maintaining close ties to artists like Frida Kahlo, and captivating the world with her unapologetic presence. A true cultural icon, María Félix is forever unforgettable. 🎬🇲🇽

📅 On view July 11–27 at MoMA.

Nan Goldin’s book “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” was the seminal photography collection of the 1980s, capturing the era’s lawless bohemianism. “In the 127 images that make up the volume proper, we watch as relationships between men and women, men and men, women and women, and women and themselves play out in bedrooms, bars, pensiones, bordellos, automobiles, and beaches in Provincetown, Boston, New York, Berlin, and Mexico,” Hilton Als writes. On the same day that Hi**er and his new wife, Eva Braun, took their own lives, the photojournalist Lee Miller took a bath in the Führer’s bathtub. Her lover at the time, the Life photographer David Scherman, captured her bathing, and in time the picture he took would become famous as a kind of apt visual metaphor for the end of the war.
