Hi ya’ll. I’m Vanessa Rees. I’ve been an advertising photographer for 13 years. As the year comes to an end, I, like so many people, am reflecting on where I am in my life and career and these are my takeaways:

- Creative and personal growth takes time, patience, and experience. You can’t fast-foward through it. 10 years ago I thought I had it figured out, but I had no idea how much more there was to know. Recognizing this, I’m excited to see where I will be in 10 years.

- In this industry, the main person you are up against is yourself. The ups and downs of this career means sitting with uncomfortable emotions, learning to cope under pressure, finding some internal peace in an unpredictable career, learning to trust yourself and the process, and really taking time to celebrate the victories.

- The people you surround yourself with mean everything. Find people who make this hard world a little softer (my girlfriend, — thanks for being my soft landing at the end of the day).

- To keep going and keep from burning out, find an authentic driving force. Money can’t be the only motivator.

- Most importantly, mental and physical health come first, always. I live and breathe photography and am quite ambitious but have learned the hard way that if I don’t put my health first, my work suffers. More than anything, the last decade I’ve learned what my limits are and how to draw boundaries to protect my time and energy. Shoutout to my therapist, Deborah

Coming into this shoot, I knew I wanted to mash up highly feminine and Americana elements with gender queerness. I knew I wanted to play with layering. I knew I wanted to work within a breakfast scene (as I often do). And I knew I wanted the image to have a snapshot feel. This is what came of my wishlist.

This shot is very much inspired by James Lee Chiahan’s () painting Crazy, Happy, Foolish, Fleeting. —A painting so impactful that it has burned itself into my brain for years. I highly recommend checking it out ❤️
