As we have reached the end of January - I have had the time to recollect on all the memories I have made with the families I have been so privileged to share a birth space with in 2021.
Wow - 2021 was such a beautiful and powerful year for birth stories! I was invited to attend 22 births this past year - each story unique and special unto its own. With every twist and turn of long hours, night births, day births, blizzard births, c-births, (H)VBACS, accidental free-births and dozens of on-call weeks I can say with confidence - I LOVE MY JOB. It’s an honor to witness stories of triumph and new life!
Here are just a handful of favorites from 2021 and I can’t wait to keep sharing more and more inspiring stories in 2022!

Hi Friends! Kat here …. It’s been a busy birth season these last few months so keeping up with my doula clients and editing birth galleries has been my top priority … I keep forgetting to feed the IG beast. But here I am!! ALSO - I’ve rolled out a brand new website with all of my recent work from 2021. I am extremely thankful to the families who have trusted me in capturing their births and holding space for them. Birth photography isn’t always the crowning image or the birthing person in the throes of labor. Yes it can be! However ... collected memories of your birth will also be delicate & soft & elegant. Especially these moments, after birth and parents gets to meet their baby for the first time in that first exploration of one another in the outside world. “I spent 9 months preparing my mind and body for a vaginal delivery. In planning for my son's birth I skipped over all the education about cesarean birth, because I thought "this won't happen to me." Medical intervention exists for a reason. My baby boy was born healthy and safely via an unplanned cesarean section. To all the parents and parents-to-be: Having a cesarean birth is not an "unnatural" birth. Be proud of yourself and your body no matter what, WE ARE POWERFUL and birth is magical no matter what door our babies use.

Rest between surges can be pure bliss. It’s a sliver of time to reground yourself, laugh, breathe, be present - and then focus again to take on the next surge with strength and compassion. Riding that wave, each one brings you closer to your baby!

So far in this wild year of 2021 - two ambitious little girls have graced us earth side on their own terms! One being born into mom’s hands, the other born into grandma’s hands. This is why us birth workers say that birth is unpredictable. As much as we like to plan our dream birth story- birth has its own plan! More often than not, we won’t make it into the birth pool or won’t have time to queue up our birth affirmations playlist! We may have a full birth team surrounding us or we may birth all alone in privacy of our darkened bedroom - but essentially it will be you & your baby all alone in this journey through labor & birth. Nothing more, nothing less. And that is your birth story!

We are blessed to encompass pure divinity, to carry within us the magic of creation. We love & we create - everyday we sing the song of life as we give to the world ourselves, selflessly and purely. And She listens - and when She is ready, She gives us the blessing of life, to grow inside us- in the magical womb where dances this perfect symphony of poetry. And we bear life, and give back to Mother Nature what She has so gracefully blessed to us - the sanctity of life & love.

“Everything Came Down to Breath & Time”

When time stands still and becomes a different force - every thing & every sound in the room disappears. The tunnel of focus becomes your breath. The depth of each travels from the tip of your head deep into your belly & down into your bottom. Everything is calm. The waves roll in once more - you breath deepens and the next thing you hear is your midwife saying “you have a baby coming..” Your body takes over, you’re barely pushing but then a few deep & powerful breaths later - your baby girl is in your arms.

The “abdominal lift & tuck” is a technique that can be used during labor to help engage baby into the pelvis for optimal positioning! Done during a contraction and with the support of a partner or doula - this can be intense & challenging for the birthing person but has proven success in helping labor progress. Rest in between contractions. CONNECT to the depth of your breath and SUBMIT to your body. OPEN your throat, let out the vibrations & ROAR! Each contraction brings you closer to your baby. You ARE the power, you ARE the earth, you ARE your birth story!
