"This one is for you. I don’t think anything hit harder in my life than in April 2013. That’s when my blue period began. T**i Nancy, I honor you every day through my womanhood, my work, and being a mother. These past 9 years have been a bit troubling for me not having you here, but you left some of you in all of us. I see it, I feel it. I know you were here to make a change, and we are here to finish what you began for you. Thank you for always being true to who you are and reflecting on that while you were on this earth. I know you look down and smile and your cheeks start to hurt. This is all for you. As much as I would have loved for these pants to have a name there isn’t one that would really do them justice. I would say they represent a stamp in the time-line of this project. Somewhat of a halfway point in between where I started and where I am now. Every process I had learned in the last year; hand stitching, screenprinting, and cyanotype are all present in these pants. If there was a “komodo-esque” way of saying midterm test, just imagine that 🔵

“In case of loss, please return home”

“Going home” is a phrase we use to describe the passing of a loved one. It’s meant to give a sense of peace that, although we have one less member of our family with us, they have gone on to a better place before us. It’s interesting that the term can be used to represent two movements in the process of loss. One being the aforementioned definition, the other being the act of the members of family returning home to give that loved one their final send off.

Home can be an ever shifting destination to which the method of access varies. It could be a flight, it could be a zoom call, or even a boat ride but one thing is always certain, it is always at the center built on a foundation of love. So going home, to me, means returning to love, on either side of life.
