THE MAASAI

Of his many trips to Tanzania, he always spend time with the Maasais families.

The culture and photogeny of this tribe has always fascinated him, and being able to be with them off the tourist route ensures a closeness and interaction that allows for a more intimate, more personal type of photos.

The eye-to-eye exchange that we get in a close-up portrait takes the picture to another level.

On the other hand, when we spend time with a Maasai family, our presence begins to become banal and we almost go unnoticed as they resume their normal life.

By taking a little distance, we can capture the reality of your day to day, whether in moments of conviviality, walking, playing or just resting.

Born in Lisbon in May 1979, he graduated in Architecture in 2002, started working in this area while still a student.

He won his first camera as a child and immediately began his connection with photography.

After a few years of dividing his life between architecture and photography,in 2010 he to devoted himself into full time photography.

He divides his work at this moment between travel photography, reportage, portraiture, editorial and commercial, always having as main reference the human figure, the face, looks and expressions, moments.

As a freelance photographer, he has collaborated and worked with entities such as Canon Portugal, Visit Lisbon Tourism, Jerónimo Martins, Soltropico, Nestlé, Fashion Lisbon Week, Exponor, Zuri Zanzibar Hotel & Resort, HBD, International Bank of Sao Tome and Principe, and published in magazines lie Volta ao Mundo, Travels & Safaris, GQ Portugal, Magnetic, Africa Geographic, Orion Magazine and Sunday Times Travel.

He has traveled the African continent, perhaps because it is in its blood, only because of the natural photogeny of its people, environments and wildlife. With about 36 countries visited, the desire to go and shoot further does not diminish and is constantly looking for new destinations to portray.

Artur's photographs will be opening at the 2nd , Opening tonight at the NBT in Harlem, New York.

The Mundari, also known as Mandari, are an ethnic group formed by around 100,000 individuals who live north of Juba between the White Nile and Tali Hills (South Sudan). The Mundari are ago-pastoralist and their economy is based on subsistence agriculture and herd

ing of livestock. They raise a considerable number of cattle, goats and sheep that are essential as mediums: connecting human beings and this world with the world of gods. But among all the animals, it is the cows that are part of the central axis of their culture.

They have developed physical arts that demonstrate Mundari cultural identity. They have perfected the arts of war implements and body decorations such as facial scarification and beautiful beaded corsets. They also usually dye their hair orange and cover all their skin with ashes that come from bonfire of cow dung.

The Mundari are highly religious. They believe God 'Ngun' hears what men say and assesses people’s deeds. This belief helps shape one’s life and social behavior. They conduct religious and rituals through mediums, landowning chiefs, who are responsible for the well-being of their chiefdoms, and the doctors, who are also diviners and treat sicknesses.

His training is eminently scientific, being a Senior Computer Engineer and PhD in Biology. His passion for traveling and studying African cultures has led him to combine the analytical and scientific vision of the cultures of the continent with the need for adventures, transporting him to the most isolated corners of the planet, and giving him a very personal anthropological perspective, which he tries to convey in his jobs.

Anibal has been working as a travel guide in Africa since 2012. In 2015 he founded his own adventure travel agency to take people to exclusive and remote places, in a work focused on the exploration, documentation and conservation of vanishing cultures.

Tbourida or Fantasia is a traditional exhibition of horsemanship in the Maghreb performed during cultural festivals and for Maghrebi wedding celebrations. "Fantasia" is an Orientalist name from the French, the actual traditional term derived from the Arabic word baroud, meaning gunpowder. It is present in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Mali, Niger, and Mauritania.
The performance consists of a group of horse riders, all wearing traditional clothes, who charge along a straight path at the same speed so as to form a line, and then at the end of the charge (about two hundred meters) fire into the sky using old muskets or muzzle-loading rifles. The difficulty of the performance is in synchronizing the movement of the horses during acceleration of the charge, and especially in firing the guns simultaneously so that one single shot is heard. ( source : Wikipedia/ for more information https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasia_(performance) )

El Mehdi Charaf is a freelancphotographer and English literature student from Beni Mellal (Morocco). Participated in several local and foreign exhibitions such as International Festival of Photographic Art “Rabat Lumières”.

Senegal in Turquoise.

This colorful palette is a depiction of Dakar and Senegal through several of its symbols, from the Mosquee de la Divinite to the fishermen boats where Pelicans and cats are claiming their share, from beautiful women working to provide for their nation.
The common theme is a soothing turquoise blue that brings all of these concepts together in a harmonious composition,

The Lens of Novakane are the visual depictions of 'Amadou Novakane Sy' an international photographer born in France and originally from the sun-kissed groves of Senegal. Currently based in New York and working for the United Nations , Novakane is dedicating his Lens primarily to the marvels and diversity of Africa, after living accross West Africa more than 8 years. People, Architecture, Style and Fashion, Novakane is enthusiastically observing our world and the wonders it has to offer in a colorful perspective. Follow the journey

Amodou will be exhibiting at the Africa Photo Festival New York 2019.

LIOR SPERANDEO - PHOTO SERIES - BONES
Under the blazing East Africa sun, people with albinism in Malawi
are at high risk. People with albinism face social stigma and
isolation, alongside physical challenges like vision or skin problems.
But the idea that their bones can make others rich or cure sickness
is the biggest fear around here.
Like other parts of East Africa, Albnistic organs are considered by
some to contain ‘healing properties’ and increase wealth and
influence.
I recently had the rare opportunity to get an inside look at this
phenomenon and follow those who were attacked and survived to
testify.

Lior Sperandeo is a visual storyteller based in Europe, working at
the intersection of photojournalism, art and social justice. His work
aims to challenge the mainstream narrative and build awareness
about issues affecting communities around the worlds, and be a
visual messenger for those in the shadows of society.

Lior will be exhibiting the 2nd Annual Africa Photo Festival New York.
The Festival opening on the 26th September NBT in Harlem.
