Watching yesterday’s WSL womens (and mens) long boarding comp took me back to my first casting assignment when i was tasked w finding a surfer for a NorthStar ski commercial for photog Dan Escobar.

To say that I felt like i had just won the lottery would be an understatement: i was being paid to be on the beach and approach as many surfers as possible. Since I was interested in learning to surf myself i took every opportunity between snapping Polaroids to ask questions. Where to go. What kind of board. I even learned the answers to questions I had never considered before that day — why is everyone throwing up when they get out of the water? Answer: it just looked that way. all that green stuff was really coming out of their nose and it was really sea water. Welcome to Ocean Beach.

Fast forward to a few months later. I was getting more and more casting assignments. And i had my first surfboard. And after I got out of the water i had my own blend of saltwater and snot to release to the pavement behind my car. I had arrived.
