The CHANGED Movement is one of the most visible conversion therapy groups in the country, and it’s on the move.
First, they went after conversion therapy bans. CHANGED filed amicus briefs in Chiles v. Salazar supporting a Christian counselor who argued conversion therapy bans were an infringement of her freedom of speech. In March, the Supreme Court sided with her and struck down the ban.
Now they’re going after the American Psychological Association.
Last month, CHANGED’s co-founder testified before a federal committee reviewing the APA’s accreditation, the system that sets the standards for how psychologists are trained. When the committee recommended suspending that recognition, CHANGED claimed victory.
We should be alarmed.
Neither of CHANGED’s founders is a psychologist, a licensed therapist, or a physician. One holds a theology degree. The other has a degree in marketing and finance. But they’re showing up in courtrooms, federal hearing rooms, and the halls of power. Bans in the U.S. only reach licensed therapists. Their church-basement programs are untouched, and now they want legitimacy in the therapist’s office too.
This is how protections disappear: one room at a time. We have to stay vigilant.
I wrote about it for TIME #, my third piece with them, and I’m so grateful to the editors who keep making space for this work.
