Scattered through my portfolio are a few images I kind of categorize as: “not sure why, but I like it.” Some quirky shots, some funny shots, and some like this where there’s just something about it that makes me happy when I see it. Alina’s dad was weaving through the crowd of guests at the during the reception, clinking glasses with friends and family. In this frame, as he was moving through, the light hit him with a bright enough spot to melt the scene behind in shadow. Rim light from the other window of screen highlighted his shoulder, while creating a perfect silhouette of another gentleman standing to allow the glass of champagne to pop. These are the kinds of images you can’t plan for (and maybe I am the only one that loves it as much as I do).

Jokes aside, I’m always looking for emotional queues to capture and, for sure, faces are the default. But almost as impactful are the hands. A soft touch, the way a couple holds hands, or hold each other, all has its own language.

A few years ago I spent the day with the Duncans at their home in Sea Ranch. The idea was to capture a day in the life—no posing, no direction—just follow along to observe, document and also just be part of the family.

Candid photography is simply being unaware, a spontaneous moment, maybe from a photographer that’s a “fly on the wall.” But to truly capture personalities, you must exist within that circle. Intimacy is key. I’m so grateful that Shana and Seth invited me in for this project.
