Mentally here this weekend 🌊
At a time when I am deeply ashamed of the purported leaders of my country & the cowards who enable their increasingly fascistic behavior, a holiday meant to celebrate independence from a monarchy rings hollow at best.
A country that is currently resurrecting & doubling down on its racist, ethnocentric roots — one whose entire foundation is built on only valuing human beings for their usefulness to create wealth for those deemed worthy — is not one that I personally want to celebrate. No country or invisible border or perceived ownership of land will ever be more important than the people that inhabit this earth.
The only glimmers of hope I’ve seen amid this chaotic time have been in the actions & the unapologetic words of people willing to stand up for each other in both big & subtle ways. In NYC, I’ve noticed more & more people lately exchanging smiles & hellos in passing, helping each other in small but meaningful ways. Like a silent exchange; a communal knowledge that we’re all we’ve got.
So this weekend I choose to celebrate the 9th year of my pup’s life, the connections & solidarity I’ve built in my Harlem community & mourn the loss of people & places that I no longer have access to physically, but that will always live deep in my spirit & have forever shaped the person I am 🤍
