Mentally here this weekend 🌊

At a time when I am deeply ashamed of the purported leaders of my country & the cowards who enable their increasingly fascistic behavior, a holiday meant to celebrate independence from a monarchy rings hollow at best.

A country that is currently resurrecting & doubling down on its racist, ethnocentric roots — one whose entire foundation is built on only valuing human beings for their usefulness to create wealth for those deemed worthy — is not one that I personally want to celebrate. No country or invisible border or perceived ownership of land will ever be more important than the people that inhabit this earth.

The only glimmers of hope I’ve seen amid this chaotic time have been in the actions & the unapologetic words of people willing to stand up for each other in both big & subtle ways. In NYC, I’ve noticed more & more people lately exchanging smiles & hellos in passing, helping each other in small but meaningful ways. Like a silent exchange; a communal knowledge that we’re all we’ve got.

So this weekend I choose to celebrate the 9th year of my pup’s life, the connections & solidarity I’ve built in my Harlem community & mourn the loss of people & places that I no longer have access to physically, but that will always live deep in my spirit & have forever shaped the person I am 🤍

If you’ve known me or seen my work in the last 15 years, you’ve probably seen the incomparable Kiki’s image appear multiple times. The first time I saw her perform live, I remember having visions of portrait ideas in my head — that happens sometimes when the music & energy of a person resonates.

We did our first shoot not too long after that show in an empty apartment I was staying in while in between places (long story!) & turned the living room into a studio. Bittersweet now to remember that Ed, who we recently lost, let me borrow all the lighting & grip & even lenses that I wanted — no questions asked. Because of course he did…

But that was just the beginning of a working dynamic & growing friendship with Kiki over the years. Life & circumstances & pandemics may have made it so that we don’t see each other as often as we once did, but the energy is always the same when we do. So when I heard about the first “minor” stroke she experienced, it hurt my heart.

But only recently did I learn that she suffered a subsequent stroke that severly impacted the right side of her body. She is not able to work at all as she goes through the grueling process of occupational therapy & needs our help.

Please consider donating if you can &/or sharing the link. Love you Ki 🤍

Caught a rainbow & some beautiful portraits by at the Whitney last night 🌈

Very inspiring work to see in person & learn more about her process of creating portraits — she essentially creative directs, produces, lights & shoots photographs to ultimately use as reference for her incredibly detailed, realist paintings. She puts so much care & consideration into each step of her process which clearly shines through in the final pieces ✨

It’s funny because the inverse of this is kind of why photography became my primary medium. I always enjoyed creating art growing up — drawing, painting, etc. — but I would get so frustrated when my art didn’t look “perfect” enough (i.e. closer to what I actually saw in my head or with my own eyes). The camera gave me that opportunity to capture what I see 📷

Anyway, clearly still thinking about it & highly recommend going to check it out!

✨ Officially an Auntie ✨

Intended to share some of these portraits I took of my sister & brother-in-law over the holidays this week as we prepared to welcome my nephew towards the end of this month, but little man decided to make an early entrance this past weekend 🤗

Everyone is healthy & safe & auntie is very excited to meet him!! 🤍

Winter walks ❄️

Not gonna lie, I’m into the sunny snow days even when it’s cold. Maybe it’s just in my DNA, but having real winter weather in the winter months makes my nervous system feel like all is right with the world (even though it’s definitely not). Stay warm out there 🤍

Last throwback for today…

Alessia Cara () — 2014

Super run & gun shoot with Alessia back before her first album was released — no makeup, no styling, just a camera + daylight on the Lower East Side with Alessia & her dad & later on in the recording studio. Love watching her evolve as an artist since then & look forward to checking out the newest album 🤩

Next throwback…

Jonathan Mannion () — 2013

As some of you know, I worked at Mannion Studio for a few years…in what feels like another lifetime! These photos were taken as we began to pack up the studio he had worked in for 20 years after receiving notice that the building was to be torn down. Felt important to capture these in that moment — thank you JM 😊

End of an era 🥂
